    English Literature or Geography?
    Hello,

With only a couple of months left til my secondary school days are over I was deciding on which A level's I definitely want to do in college.

I want to go on to do an economics degree in University so I thought the following subjects would be the best choice for this degree:
    -Maths
    -Further Maths
    -Economics
    -English Literature

However, recently I have been having some doubts on choosing Literature as I thought geography would be more relavent to doing an economics degree. Also, I think that doing geography over literature would be a better choice as geography is a lot easier than english (apparently...) and so it would be wiser to do geography as I will need all the A's in a level I can get due to me having only 9 GCSEs in total.

However I do love english literature although I am not very skilled in it.

What do you guys think I should take?

I take both English Lit and Geography - both are quite hard, but yes i think Geography is slightly easier, if you dont mind learning a ton of case studies and lots of figures for them.
I think Geography is good for economics as it shows you can interpret data well and remember figures.
But if you know you will enjoy English Lit more then take that, its your choice just make sure you are comfortable with it otherwise you will give yourself too much workload. It involves lots of reading, but again shows you can be analytical.

I just don't want to take english lit as I think it'll be too hard for me to get an A* in as there is no set mark scheme like other subjects

Your reply was much appreciated btw

I take Maths, Economics, History and English Lit. To be honest most universities want you to study maths at A level in order for you to do Economics as a degree. The people I know find Geography very tedious, but them again not every subject is for everyone and yes some aspects do tie in with Economics nicely but it's NOT a requirement to do it. To be honest, I love English Lit and I enjoy doing it. I chose both History and English because they are both essay based and I wanted to show universities that I am confident in writing essays... But I suggest you pick the subject YOU want to do and YOU know you'll enjoy I can't stress that enough! There's nothing worse than picking a subject that you dislike and having to stick with it... A lot of my friends have done that and are contemplating on staying in college for 3 years instead of 2 as they want to drop two AS levels this year

Yeah, I've done English Lit and from personal experience it is very VERY hard. Everyone in my class is giving it up except me. I wouldn't do it unless you are absolutely definite it is what you want to do, and (I hate to have to say it) something you believe you will succeed in. If all else fails, lay aside rationing and go for what feels right. I took Maths instead of RS alongside English Language, English Lit and History at first... purely because I felt I 'ought' to do a sciency subject... and I gave it up to do RS in two weeks. So yeah, go for English Lit if you feel you'd enjoy it more and could definitely do it, otherwise go for Economics... but at the end of the day I'd go for what feels right.

I take both lit & geography. I think both are hard, they are A Levels after all!
Personally, I find lit much harder than geography though it may differ depending on your strengths!
    Geography is good with economics!
So if you don't mind revising a few facts & case studies, geography is a good A level to have!

Geography isn't too difficult. The content is very straight forward and easy to comprehend, the case studies, diagrams, figures etc. are the hardest part (and there's a lot of them too learn, like seriously, a lot!).

English Lit is wonderful - it can be challenging but it is so interesting. I know a few of my classmates find it difficult and/or boring but I guess it depends on your own tastes. If you enjoy reading and you are open-minded and eager to discover different interpretations of texts, you'll enjoy it. Nearly all of the texts I studied for my A level are now some of my favourites. Although it is my degree so perhaps I'm a little biased :cute:. Also, by taking a subject like English alongside your other subjects, you're showing that you're a well-rounded student and are studying a wide range of subjects.

Thank you all for your suggestions, I'm just worried I won't be able to get an A in english lit as it is so hard to know actually what you have to do. Like in maths, there are set answers for everything whereas in english everything is so vague and the mark schemes don't really specificy what they are looking for.
