    Dealing with depressed partner
Anon so no-one I know can see.

I'm currently at university, and my boyfriend and I are LDR. We have only been together for 7 months or so but have been very close for much longer. Anyway a couple of weeks or so ago he was diagnosed with depression and has gone on Prozac. This isn't new to me, and it's been going on for some while. However it really peaked over Easter as we got to spend some time together. I haven't seen him for ages due to exams but it's starting to really take a toll on me and how I feel. I feel as if I have to be the happy one all the time and as if he's placing unrealistic demands upon me by asking me to be (physically) there all the time, and being unable to make any sort of decision without asking me several times. I know it's beyond difficult for people with depression but I also have my own life. I'm going on a year abroad next year and am worried about how it's going to go then any advice?

    Re: Dealing with depressed partner
One thing to take into account is the fact that after being prescribed Prozac someone can experience a serious dip in their mood, even worse than the depression they were suffering from before, before it starts to have a beneficial impact.
While it is obvious your boyfriend needs you right now, don't feel guilty for thinking of your own wellbeing. It might seem difficult to broach the subject without risking upsetting him, but it'll be easier than you think. Reassure him that you'll be there to support him, but you can't be there for him all the time. No doubt he'll understand, and due to the fact he's confronted his illness and is seeking medical help, things will get better for him. x
