History of Art at University of York
Having fallen in love with the subject at A-Level I would really love to continue it on to HE and, as York offers a fantastic combination with my other passion (English Lit
) resulting in me being really interested in the university.
However, though I've seen tons about English there (which all sounds incredible) I was wondering if anyone doing History of Art could give any form of insight into the course? And is there anyone else out there thinking of applying for this (2013 entry)? -
Re: History of Art at University of YorkI was wondering, firstly, how flexible the course as a whole is. Can you give more weight to, say, English from the beginning or is it only from second year when you begin to choose more specialist modules?(Original post by Aeschylus)
The History of Art course is very popular. I know many people doing the joint course. There's a huge variety of modules and HOA soc is quite popular. What do you want to know re: modules, dissertation etc?
Also, are the seminars for the two individual subjects with only with people doing the combined course or do you take them with a mixture of people doing the other two degrees by themselves too.
And finally, how modern do they go with modules for History of Art - I absolutely adore Renaissance art which I'm sure they will offer but I'm also really into the YBA group and modernist stuff over in America.
I know you may not be able to answer all of that because you don't actually do the degree but I'm kind of obsessively researching every course I'm interested in at the moment

Re: History of Art at University of YorkBear in mind I'm doing the 'old' english course and the 'new' one is much more flexible. However, I'm pretty certain you can give more weight from the first year onwards - a lot of people in my year certainly did.(Original post by fliortia)

Each seminar will be a specifically english or history of art seminar. However I've never had an english seminar where there hasn't been a joint student - either english/history english/politics english/linguistics and english/hoa so there is a good mix you won't be on your todd.
As for the module choices, I don't know. I know there's a lot of focus on medieval art but I would be surprised if that's not covered and worst come to worst and they don't offer it you can always write your dissertation on it. -
Re: History of Art at University of YorkWow, thanks so much for putting up with all my questions on both threads - that's really helpful to know and I just really wanted to know in general terms. The university looks so incredible that I'm quite happy to ask the specifics on Open Days - as long as it appears to be the right place for me, which it really does.(Original post by Aeschylus)

Re: History of Art at University of YorkHaha some parts of the university are an 'acquired taste' (60s concrete brutalism) but the new stuff on Hes East and the new sports facilities look incredible(Original post by fliortia)

Re: History of Art at University of YorkYeah, my friend was put off by some of the old stuff and I know - in a ridiculous kind of way - it sort of puts it back against Durham in my mind slightly, but the course they offer is just so perfect for me that I can't seem to shake it as my number one.(Original post by Aeschylus)

And I saw an 'artist's interpretation' of the new sports centre in the prospectus and it looks really great, I know I will be spending a lot of time in the gym so the idea of that all being free is a big plus in the York box. -
Re: History of Art at University of York
One of my good friends does History of Art at York and she *loves* it. I don't know much about the course other than you don't get much flexibility in terms of modules in first year.
if you have any more specific questions, i will try and get my friend to help ^_^ -
Re: History of Art at University of York
One of my flatmates does History of Art and she loves it too. And she did things like helping out in putting up exhibitions in the university gallery. From what I've heard the course seems to span quite well and covers all sorts of periods..the only worry she did talk about was on the required Italian language - but I guess you can't avoid Italian for HOA..

Re: History of Art at University of YorkHi, i'm also thinking of applying for History of Art at York and like you love the A level. It looks a really good course! Where else are you thinking of applying to?(Original post by fliortia)
