Re: What do you predict the world will be like in a 100 years?
DNA research will eventually advance to a point in which we can fully decode our genomes. We will be able to read each persons biological blueprint as clearly as if it was a Betty Crocker recipe. The profound impact this would have on society is both exciting and terrifying at the same time.
Think of all the spirited debates we would be able to put to rest and/or elevate to a new level. Essentially we would have undeniable, and empirical data to prove/disprove the differences between races, sexes, sexualities, and any other group we want to argue about. As someone who thrives on controversy, I would love to see all the special interests scramble to use such information to their advantage and/or struggle to discredit its' validity.

Re: What do you predict the world will be like in a 100 years?
There is almost no certain way we can know what will happen as revolutions and political change can happen so quickly as we have seen. Back in 1945 no one would have expected the Soviet Union to collapse a few decades after in 1991.
I'm no ph.D in international relations or world politics but I think that the economy of the world especially in Europe and the United States will collapse and recover a couple of times because of the high deficits namely the United States, and the United Kingdom. The Euro could perhaps collapse in Europe.
The Euro might only be confined to countries like France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands because similar to now, the Eurozone crisis is affecting so many countries because so many use the Euro. So if less countries use Euros, less will be affected.
The Middle East would become increasingly rich, almost similar in standards to the United States and Western Europe especially in countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran although there would be multiple reforms and government collapses.
As for energy, people will either have to result to using nuclear power, hydroelectricity or solar power as oil will probably run out.
Africa at that time would be like Asia now and the strongest economies would probably still be South Africa, Egypt and Libya although we might see a spike in the economy in areas like the DR Congo and Angola because of resources.
It could also be possible that China would change as people begin to care more about human rights. North Korea will probably be similar to what it is now if not unified. -
Re: What do you predict the world will be like in a 100 years? That episode of Futurama, was totally not the inspiration for this post.(Original post by ckingalt)
Virtual reality and social media will merge with a combination of innovation and technological breakthroughs that will make the virtual world dangerously more appealing than the real one. This will lead to a social epidemic of people withdrawing more and more from reality in order to "plug into" the artificial one they prefer. As a result government will have to establish a department to regulate, monitor and ration people's interface time in order to prevent a complete social breakdown.
Essentially, the online gaming experience will become the next narcotic that must be controlled. -

The potential benefits and dangers of this in the future are quite scary! ^ -

Possibility of technological singularity. Fully implemented nano technology for fighting most diseases. Nuclear fusion plants fully operational or mass-scale cost effective renewable energy, globally. Life-expectancy over 100 for most in developed countries. Global population over 9 billion. Mass migration and displacement due to global warming/rising sea levels. Life on other planets discovered (not talking E.T but simple organisms). Possibly a manned mission to Mars with the advancements in space technology?

not to be pessimistic, but I honestly believe one of the hemispheres will be a nuclear wasteland, and the other will be wrecked by immigrants because of the disaster... 100 years, in a world with nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons.... it could happen

Re: What do you predict the world will be like in a 100 years?
I've heard a lot of theories that the rate of progression in developed countries will be maintained as we are as developed as possible, and that non-developed countries will develop until they hit this so called devlopment limit? Don't know if this is accurate? Like it didn't say all countries will hit this development limit, but many western countries are close to it whilst others, like China atm, are not so are quickly developing only to slow down in about 50 years. Make sense?

Re: What do you predict the world will be like in a 100 years? Thanks for that
A really interesting read, although I never take these sorts of things too seriously...
Both depressing and encouraging to be honest... dunno about anyone else, but I feel uncomfortable with the idea of the world - in my lifetime, being changed beyond all recognition, even if it is inevitable... I mean, can you imagine what it would be like being born in 1900, living through all that change, right up to say...2010... just imagine how different the world in 2010 is to your world of 1900... there's just something...unsettling about it I think.
On the other hand... I wanna go play Civ 3 now haha
