    GM Food Fears
    Hey guys;

    Well, as you well know now, GM food is now coming out of the realms of sci-fi into reality because as you probably know, with an ever increasing population, a greater demand for food is required which means food has to be either;

    A. Grown faster
    B. Grown bigger in the same amount of time

    An example of this is where in India (my teacher told me this and has apparently written a paper on it) how western scientists in Switzerland helped design a drought resistant rice called "Golden Rice" due to it growing far faster and having a high amount of vitamin A within it.
    As of yet, there have been NO side effects from this strain of GM food and the majority of fear is hyped up by the media because they NEVER pick out the benefits only things like "Liver cancer in cows caused by Frankenfoods". Do they forget to mention that the majority of these cows have THE SAME father resulting in the potential result of genetics having problems as well?

    What do you think?

    It's either use GM crops or let people in low incomer countries starve due to malnutrition. You always get people moaning about possible side effects which have no evidence what so ever. GM is the future.

    GM foods including Golden rice have a proven track record and have been found safe to eat. They are also damn cool and I want my giant vegetables.

    GM Foods are bad. No one knows the long term consequences.

    My friend owns a farm. He grew gm crops for x years. It destroyed the soil.
    His other friend stayed organic and now has LOADS more yield than him.

    Also for all you pressed Yes and those pathetic GM loving students who have no knowledge on the topic, here are some links.

    I'm more concerned about the ownership and licensing of such technology. Allowing it to be patented and therefore putting the means to control the food supply solely in private hands rather than the commons opens the sector to incredible abuse.

    The first few pages of this in particular are pretty frightening: http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/f...monsanto200805

    Do you have any data that isn't about fictional farms belonging to friends that do not exist outside of your own argument?

    Hey guys;

    A quick link to the dailymail article on a new apple which has been Genetically modified to not turn brown.

    Note a popular comment "Can you say cancer?"

    Your eating GM foods now probably. Wheat has been genetically modified over thousands of years which is why they have very high yields and a shorter stem.

    People are really stupid and ignorant. Everything has DNA, just because it has a scary name like 'genetically modified' doesn't mean it is going to harm you.

    The only argument I can see against it is the possibility of the creation of a superweed although this is extremely unlikely.

    Go GM Foods!

    Actually, GM foods and artificial selection are VERY different things, look it up.

    Ah, the brief heraldry of the scientific advance followed by the luddites churning out the same arguments that have opposed progress since the industrial revolution. 'It will drive prices down' is a particular favourite as it is synonymous with 'It will be more efficient'.

    I think it would be a fight between those who want to produce more food and faster to feed the ever increasing world population, and those who would prefer to reduce population numbers by any means necessary.

    If you readily admit nobody knows the consequences, why are you so sure they are bad?

    Good to see strong support for GM crops here.

    I'm personally really angry at those that want to rip up the GM crops. Why do they want to ruin scientific research like that? I think we should name and shame them for when food prices sky rocket in the future.

    Can i just add that there is no short supply of food. There is more than plenty of food for every single person on the planet its just that it is poorly distributed.
    To me GM food seems harmless enough however if i have the option i would not eat it. Unless i have seen the effect of GM foods on a population and on the environment over a long period of time i will treat it with suspicion. For farmers to grow GM foods they have to purchase the seeds of corporations each and every year. This just makes dependent on the corporations.
    Give me some time to see the long term effects of GM foods then i will decide if they are truly safe to eat.

    What do you think?
    I think GM foods are great, you can get higher yields with less land, you can feed more people for less, it has the potential to put a huge dent in world hunger, it will bring food prices down.

    However there are people out there that don't understand this and before GM foods can be brought to the market, there needs to be trials which have to be done through the government... the government aren't so good at keep secrets and the trials get trashed by idiots that understand nothing.

    GM Foods are good for the world.
