Paper round at 18, embarrassing?
I'm 18 and in 6th form. Recently I need a bit of money, and my mum knows someone at the local paper and has got me a round to do weekly. The pay is probably about £5.57 for an hour and a half work.
The route it's on is local and people I know live around it. Would it be embarrassing at this age to be doing a paper round? -
Re: Paper round at 18, embarrassing?Yeah it's pretty embarrassing given that you would have to explain to your friends everytime they see you on your bike going around the streets that there is no other decent jobs available or that you got turned down everywhere. You should learn to play poker, not only is it fun, but you can easily make some money from it if you work hard enough at it, and people will respect you for it.(Original post by GOT111)

If you really need money, make an Ebay account and flog some things on it. My sister sells old clothes all the time and has made atleast £100+ probably about £200
Like said above, a paper round is more acceptable if your fat as it can be an excuse to lose weight. However, don't take anything we have said on board. If you need money, and your mam want's you to make money, then fair does and go and get yourself a paper round. Even if you realise the money to effort ratio is ****, it will still be on your CV. In other words, short term loss, long term gain. Plus it will get you some work ethic especially if its your first job. I would say, try it out, even though its embarrassing and just apply to jobs in the meantime. (LEARN HOW TO MAKE GOOD CV AND INTERVIEW SKILLS)Last edited by owen1994; 24-05-2012 at 19:21. -
Re: Paper round at 18, embarrassing? Not as embarrassing as having no money and nothing at all to put on a CV. What's embarrassing about working?(Original post by GOT111)

It's money, if there's nothing else then you may as well do it.
Though the pay is pretty awful...is that even min wage for an 18 yr old?
EDIT:
For an hour and a half you should expect at least £7.47 as an 18 year old.

Re: Paper round at 18, embarrassing? He is not wrong either! I always sent out a cheapo christmas card to every residency I delivered to. I simply put 'to all at x address, merry christmas from Stuart, your paperboy' and I had the old biddies coming out in their droves to chuck me fivers and tenners. Some of them would me give £20. The cash soon added up; I received around £200 every year in tips, which when you are 13/14 seems pretty awesome! lol(Original post by Left Hand Drive)
At Christmas send out some christmas cards and you'll earn a couple of hundred in tips
As for the original question; it is a tad embarrasing doing a paper round until you are 18 yeah but if you are unable to get a proper job, at least you can hold your head up high and proudly say you are unable to find work, yet you are refraining from signing on the dole. -
Re: Paper round at 18, embarrassing?
At the end of the day, a job's a job, and money's money. You'll be lucky enough to have both; many people don't have the former and can barely show anything for the latter!

Best of luck if you decide to stick with it!
If you don't fancy it, just think of it as a stepping stone for a better job!

Re: Paper round at 18, embarrassing?
I'd have so much more respect for somebody who had a paper round at eighteen, than somebody who lived off their parents at eighteen. I personally don't think the world is a safe enough place any more for people under sixteen to go to people's houses delivering papers, but there you go.

Didn't bother reading half the comments here, but in the end if you want the money, go ahead. You will soon get over the initial embarrassment as at least you have some money coming in and that's all that matters!
