    Repeat Offenders
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18188610

I heard on the news earlier that the number of repeat offenders is at the highest level on record in the UK. This disgusts me; for a "civilized" country, you'd think we'd have our crime rates under control!! Apparantly not though.

I personally think that the justice system is a joke; far too leniant, and people are all but getting away with whatever the hell they like!! Appalling. Anyway, post your thoughts on this subject.

And your suggestion to improve it is? Moaning doesn't fix anything by itself.

Crackdown on punishment. Life in prison is generally, what, 30 years at a push? Rubbish!! For murderers, I would bring back the death penalty; why should they live at the taxpayer's expense?

Longer jail sentences and much larger fines as well; plus make it harder for offenders to live with a criminal record. Crack down on these people and make them think twice; it would be a start!!

You can either view the judicial system as too lenient or too broad. I don't believe we have the answers but it does seem odd to me that someone who committed theft goes to the same place as a murderer, just for less time.

well, it is all good and well trying to find a solution to the problem. Surely it would be better to prevent the problem from arising?

I'm not going to go down the death penalty argument, that's a whole different topic that can go on for hours.

More prison time does not reduce repeat offenders, in fact most examples prove the opposite. Sitting around a bunch of people who have committed other crimes isn't the best way to learn a new "honest" job.

Also, by the way, you do get multiple life sentences.

Also, larger fines do not necessarily help. You can't get someone to pay out more money than they have, there is an upper limit.

Also, many crimes are done without thought for the punishment, especially the more horrible ones like murder. Most murders are committed in the heat of the moment, when you don't think about the consequences.

May I ask you, what do you think is more important? Punishing those who have committed crimes or improving the life of those that haven't?

I don't. Kiddy ****ers are always going to **** kids. Just because they get "treatment" in prison doesn't mean it has any effect. dealwithit.jpg

Haha, people like the OP that don't seem to realise that for the most part the idea of prison is to rehabilitate are just so ****ing annoying. And they're everywhere.

I always thought "rehabilitation" should be optional and up to the prisoner. The main purposes of prison should be deterrence and getting dangerous people out of the public.

With regards to crime, I'm pretty sure it's been on the decrease for a decade now. It's certainly not something I'd want to suddenly implement radical programs for, and surely (all else being equal) the more lenient the better?

No. **** that. Attempts should be made to rehabilitate all but the worst, if someone shows no signs of improving then just lock them up with a serious sentence. Keep them in till they're old and worthless.

Prison should be entirely for getting dangerous people out of the way.

Rehabilitation centers should be separate things. The majority of people in prison should be out doing things that benefit the community, not just locked away.

**** Britain for popularizing prisons worldwide. They're a failed system.
