A Level Choices
Hey everyone,
I am currently in the process of picking my A Level options, and am almost certain that I'm going to take Sociology and Psychology, but am unsure as to whether to choose Government & Politics or Economics as my final subject. Your opinions would be greatly valued.
Many thanks:) -
Re: A Level ChoicesWell I'd probably advise you to have a look at each specification (you can access them from each exam boards websites) and see which one you'd prefer and actually enjoy more, because at the end of the day that's what matters most - you'll have to do this subject for 2 years!(Original post by SophieSharp)

Any ideas what you want to do at uni/careerwise? It might help people give you advice.
If you want to do something to do with social sciences/people (like sociology and psychology focus on) then either fit in nicely but I'd probably advise G&P over Economics.
At the same time, Economics does tend to be slightly more respected. That doesn't mean to say G&P isn't at all though, it's just the Eco is that one step ahead.
If you want real life opinions, my friends tend to enjoy G&P more than Economics on the whole, but that might be by coincidence, and you might find it the other way around!
So my main tips would be to look at the specs and decide which one looks most interesting and what you think you might enjoy more or be better at, as well as have a think about what kind of thing you might want to do at uni/after you leave college.
Hope I've helped

Economics isn't a soft a-level(Original post by AGrumpyMole)
You're only doing those subjects because you aren't interested in anything else, and you think by doing ones that you've never done before you'll enjoy them. Plus, they're all soft A-levels

Re: A Level Choices
In my opinion, Economics is the better, more interdisciplinary social science between the two, and I see that's the combination you're going for.
This and neither is Politics.(Original post by PeaceLoveKindness)

Re: A Level ChoicesFair enough, Economics isn't, but politics is (according to Cambridge and various other sites).(Original post by Id and Ego seek)

Re: A Level ChoicesI actually don't think that I'll go to university, well, at least not for several years.(Original post by roflcakes1)
What do you want to do at uni?
Both subjects are on the same par, so you should really choose on what you enjoy most/what you're best at. -
Re: A Level ChoicesI thought that too. Do you/did you take A level Economics?(Original post by ThumbsUp)
Economics is certainly more respected and opens up your choices for what you want to do in the future

Re: A Level ChoicesWoaaah, Mystic Meg, it's like you're in my mind! Stop making presumptions. You don't know me.(Original post by AGrumpyMole)

Also, I think it's really unfair of you to say all the four subjects that I mentioned are 'soft'. Just because the majority of them are social sciences that doesn't mean they aren't thought-provoking or respected. -
Re: A Level ChoicesNo - Oxbridge say it's less suitable but certainly not considered soft. Check the list.(Original post by AGrumpyMole)
Fair enough, Economics isn't, but politics is (according to Cambridge and various other sites). -
Re: A Level Choicesno i didnt three or four of my friends did they came out with A/Bs and they found it enjoyable, hope that helps
pyschology is also really interesting and you can usually achieve high grades in it assuming you do the work. i was going to take it instead or physics..wish i had now! -
Re: A Level Choicesmaybe it hasnt occurred to you but not everyone has the desire to go to oxbridge. Other russel group unis like southampton etc consider psychology and sociology as quite respected and not soft. so telling people about oxbridge when they may have not wanted to go there in the first place isnt really helpful is it?(Original post by AGrumpyMole)
