Re: This is silly...but how do you stay cool?Well, some people in our climate already wear head-to-foot dark robes of course.(Original post by Octohedral)
Interesting
I doubt it makes much difference in this climate, but have edited post.

Re: This is silly...but how do you stay cool?
Well it's a lot hotter where I am now (middle east) than the UK, so here are my tips:
Don't wear shoes and socks whenever possible around the house, keep you feet cool and you can lose a lot of heat via conduction to the floor. Plus air blowing over your feet gives the impression of being cool.
Wear loose-fitting clothes, colour doesn't matter though some red and yellow may attract bugs, which might make you feel more stuffy.
Drink lots of water. Drink often, pee often - keeping hydrated stops the heat giving you headaches, you feel more alert and 'fresher'.
Draw your curtains, if you have the option get some shading on the OUTSIDE of your window, that way you don't get any heat radiation in your room from incident sunlight whatsoever. Shading within the room only serves to slow down heat gain, since the heat is still in your room. So it works in the mornings, but you will begin to reach higher temperatures later on.
Rinse cold water over your wrists, massively cools your blood and refreshes you.Last edited by Architecture-er; 25-05-2012 at 12:43. -
Re: This is silly...but how do you stay cool?I know, it was in response to the 2nd poster saying how black absorbs heat, when it's actually an urban myth.(Original post by Fires)
Very cool and refreshing. -

That drinking tea thing is a myth, based on someone's misunderstanding of why people eat hot (ie spicy) food in hot climates to promote sweating.
You can't trick the laws of thermodynamics. Pour hot liquid into your body and you will get hotter, not cooler.
Following similar logical to "hot drinks make you sweat which cools you down", you could argue that to cool down step into a sauna, or set your clothes on fire, because both of those things make you sweat like a bitch. -

wear as little clothing as possible - of what you do wear, loose is good, as is thin material. if you have a fan, that is good. keep you window and door open for good air circulation. if you have a skylight window, pull the blinds down. try to keep in the shade and drink lots of water. If you are really sweating, go to the chemist and buy some rehydration powder. This has salts and minerals that are lost in sweat. It also reduces the effect of osmosis on your cells (though this is only a problem if your dangerously dehydrated).
you can also by a spray bottle and spray yourself with water. if your feet are hot, fill a plastic basin with cold water and rest your feet in it.
pimms is always nice in this weather, but avoid too much alcohol.
if there is a pool nearby, a swim is nice aswell. if you are pale skinned or don't tan well, use sun-cream. if your a girl, use a parasol when you go out side - not recommended if your a guy. may look a bit funny.
avoid the hotter rooms in the house - wander round and see which ones tend to be the coolest, and avoid any rooms where the sun is shining into (this may change through-out the day).
the bottom floor should be good theoretically because heat rises, but i notice my attic always seems quite cold.
when its hot i don't dry my hair with a dryer - it makes my head and my room hot. the wet hair also cools me down. tie it into a bun so it doesn't trap heat around your head.
hope that helps
