    Most enjoyable and scenic motorway
Which is the nicest motorway to go out for a drive on? I've recently learned to drive and want to see some more but tried the M5 towards Birmingham, that wasn't all that nice, also the M4 towards London, that was fairly boring.

Are there some interesting motorways to try? Which is the most pleasant?

There aren't really any 'nice' motorways but the M6 goes through some nice scenery up in Cumbria and the Southern Uplands of Scotland. But motorways as a rule weren't built to take the scenic route. If you want to practice your motorway driving and get comfortable then I recommend the M25- once you can drive on that other motorways won't seem daunting.

M6 through the Lake District. And if you can handle the M6 through Birmingham then you can handle most motorway driving. The M3 is also pretty in parts, but has a couple of scary and frankly dangerous junctions. My favourite moment on the motorways I've driven is when you're coming north up the M40 and come through a gap in the hills into a beautiful vista of Oxfordshire in front of you, but the rest of the M40 is nothing special.

I assume from your tryouts so far, you're somewhere in the South-West? You could try the M50, that's a pleasant drive down into Wales, very green and lovely. Also not strictly a motorway, but duel-carriageway most of the way, the A303 is a lovely drive in places, also you get to see Stonehenge up close which is spectacular.

Presume money for fuel is not a problem given your previous postings? And what sort of car does a posh private school girl get these days?

Oh, haha, I'm not showing off, just really pleased to be driving! I have a BMW 1 Series, 1-yr old.

I seem to remember the A74(M)/M74 being quite interesting? It's a long way north though.

Might go up that way though. I was looking for drives generally in the South-West/West of England or in Wales I think.

The M6 through the Lake District is pretty nice, and if you carry on into Scotland it gets even nicer.

The M40 is quite scenic, there's a great bit at some point on the M40 where you cut right into some hills, it used to always scare me when I was younger!

That sounds good, I will try it.

I am surprised how boring motorway driving is, I thought it would be really frantic and scary but mostly you just wonder what to think about and how to pass the time. When I am a passenger in Mum or Dad's cars and we're on the motorway I listen to music or chat non-stop but it's somehow different when you're driving.

Nah, rural A-roads are much more exciting. Motorways are fast, sure, but they're fairly straight, no big hills, and you only have to deal with traffic in one direction. I dislike driving long distances on motorways because it's so samey that you run the risk of losing concentration.

Was recently on the m62 to Manchester- I have to say it was beautiful, plus it has the highest summit of any motorway in England. Its definitely one to try out

Have you tried an entire loop of the M25? If not you should try it, there are even M25 coach tours these days

As for nice motorways, I've always taken M40 as the nicest and most scenic one in the southern part of the country and it is also the one I used the most when I lived in Britain, but the best would be the M62 since it goes through the Pennines, though I won't use that road in the winter time in a BMW

Personally prefer the A or B roads for their scenic qualities.
