    Entrepreneur Offering Advice
Hello. Back in 1997 me and a fellow graduate set up a business. Since then, GRB has been providing a free graduate recruitment service matching high calibre graduates with leading recruiters. We remain independent, have grown steadily, survived a recession and employ over 30 staff from our Brighton based office. If you are thinking of setting up a business feel free to fire me some questions and I'll see if I can help.

    Hello,

I'm a graduate and looking to set-up my own business in the green industries. I'm struggling to come up with an idea. Can I ask how you come up with this idea? How long it took you to come up with an idea?

    Thanks.

The process leading to the final idea took us about a year. You can just as easily have an eureka moment in a shorter time but we didn't rush into it. The process involved lots of discussions about our skills, costs, scenario planning, financial forecasting, competitor analysis, market research and of course something we both felt passionately about. This last part is really vital as without it your motivation could disappear. The eventual idea wasn't necessarily new but we had a different approach to it and still believe in it to this day.

I'm thinking of setting up a website. I won't be selling anything on it. I'm hoping that if it does become successful in the future, I will be earning from advertisers placing adverts on my site.

So my question is, whilst I'm not selling anything on it (sorry, can't really give you much more detail than that at this stage), do I need to register as a business?

We're not a job site, we provide a free graduate recruitment service, matching graduates with employers. We had no recruitment experience beforehand which consequently flavoured our style and innovation. For instance, the internal structure of the firm is unique enabling us to enjoy several competitive advantages. What area of business are you looking to enter?

Im hoping to enter ecomerce but I'm not sure what I want to sell, I don't really mind at the moment because I can't think of anything that could be successful and is 'differenet'.

No you don't need to register with CH if that's the case. You will need to when you start generating revenue for tax reasons.

I've been considering starting up a recruitment website seeing as I've found a massive niche in matching the unemployed accurately to the employer's requirement which I haven't seen anywhere else.

My first thought was to start off generating a densely populated consumer base offering a free analysis service before venturing into a subscription based service later down the line as I'm wary of bigger recruitment organizations implementing this idea who have stronger reputation & capital and I would need some sort of revenue to protect myself in the long run.

What income could you expect from a recruitment website?

How do you actually create the website for a recruitment website?

Lets say, I started up a eCommerce website and starting selling goods (either physical or unphysical), what kind of legality issues would I face. Could I just start without any documentation until I reached a certain revenue level?

For physical goods you need product liability insurance that covers you if the product malfunctions and causes harm to someone. You should also look at the distance (or distant) selling regulations if you haven't already.

How did you establish credibility? How long was it before you had customers (as in people paying for your services)?

I have an idea to fill a hole, but am basically floundering around in terms of what I need to do to make it a reality.

    Thanks

(btw anyone here with technical website skills in particular, or any other business skills, but no idea, drop me a message)
