Oxford students lead the way on the recession
Welcome to the University of Oxford forum: where prospective and current students can discuss anything about Oxford.

Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionWell now I'm going to reply with the same statement you made: bull. My GCSE grades were 5A*s, 3As and 2 Bs and my A-levels were 3As (I was in the first year group to have the A*), and umm...I'm HERE. I have also NEVER heard of a member of academic staff who would say somethign like that to a prospective student- they're here to encourage people to apply, not tell them "it's highly unlikely you'll ever get in" to their faces.(Original post by I Gurn Hard)
Bull. I've been there a few times and each time immediately wanted to leave. I also overheard a conversation in the dining hall between a few girls on the open day. One girl says: "Which academy did you go to?"
Another replies: "Naturally Roedean"
I also asked a member of staff who was meant to be helping on the open day if I would be passed over for consideration with 'only' 6A*'s at GCSE yet with 3A* and 1A at A level, and I was told it was "highly likely" and that he "wished people would stop asking such ridiculous questions". -
Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionEven Oxford students, like many young people in Britain, aren't really aware of socio-economic reality. They repeat the usual left-wing platitudes, but their actions are very different. The girls are a hilarious example of this: they repeat the anti-objectification, anti-patriarchy catechism but spend much of their time dolling up, partying and trying to pull the college hottie.(Original post by Fires)
The point is that it's politically interesting, because it's an interesting signal about the current attitudes of the kids of the privileged elite as they go forwards - clearly this revelling in class privilege and the closed world of staggering Oxbridge college wealth is set fair to continue, regardless of the outside world. It's like a mad, Marie Antoinette-style bubble. -
Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionLol you are an awesome troll. "I say it is funded by the taxpayer, ergo I am right! Bow to my logic!" Actually got quite a laugh out of your post.(Original post by Fires)
I assure you they are coming very much back into fashion! It is you privileged elites at Oxford who are drifting into trouble with your behaviour.
How is this not taxpayers money by the way? The real story here is that it is utterly outrageous that the taxpayer is funding lavish parties for already-super-privileged kids like this at a time like this!! -

Durham has more private students than Oxford does. I don't see anybody bashing them? Ok, I will.
Durham sucks.
Durham, St Andrews, Bristol and Edinburgh are funny. Nominally they're second, or third tier univs. in this country (behind the triple-alliance of London powerhouses), but the large numbers of privately taught students there are second rate failures who have been coached for the top level and failed. The mavericks from normal backgrounds are obviously pretty special though. -

Cucumber? It will be canapes, finest salmon, Pimms, top quality Vodka, fine selections of expensive fruit, etc.
Oxbridge Colleges by the way consistently refuse to publish accounts, so nobody other than insiders really knows where the money comes from - however, it is generally believed that much of it comes from research money and that is nearly all taxpayers money, one way or another.
They have been published, and analysed..... -
Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionLOL, yes. I have to say that one aspect of Oxford life I enjoyed was the spectacularly fashionable Oxford UMC girl, who often combines beauty with the mildly nerdy and well-dressed chic, in ways that are peculariarly sexually potent. I suppose boys will be boys and girls will be girls, regardless of social context and the veneer of civilisation.(Original post by mournfulpirate)

Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionPeople always come out with this sort of thing, but it's guff. Edinburgh is a great University and far from being full of Oxbridge private school rejects, it is full of high achievers, some of whom are from private school and some of whom tried to get into Oxbridge, but they are on the whole here because they chose to be.(Original post by mournfulpirate)

Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionThank you voice of reason.(Original post by michael321)
I think it's best not to feed the trolls. Clearly the OP has some axe to grind and is determined to find that Oxford students are all multi-millionaire toffs who hunt poor people for sport, and burn money to keep warm. I don't think reason will have much influence on his opinions.

I spot many such Daria-lookalikes on my weekly trawl around Tesco and the occasional visit to the Missing Bean. They do get the trousers twitching. -

Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionNot bull at all, I was on an open day at Magdalen college. It put me off applying at all, since I didn't want to even try to get in somewhere where a request for help was greeted with, dare I say it, rudeness.(Original post by Bobo1234)

I wasn't claiming to have spotted some hidden truth. The location alone, explains their self-interested defense of Edinburgh, you dunce. -
Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionThis is really strange. I made no secret of coming from Edinburgh, I was recounting my knowledge of the student body as I see it, in rebuttal to a very distorted view of the university as being full of Oxbridge rejects. Why are you making such a thing of it? You seem to be keener to denigrate than to engage.(Original post by mournfulpirate)

I made one correct point, which is often discussed/joked about by my fellow students. You and another poster are trying to argue against it. -
Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionYou are shifting ground - the initial point was that you appeared to not notice that I had freely stated I was from Edinburgh - something you made a fuss of "discovering". Once caught out in that, you are attempting to shift back to the initial grounds of the point I was rebutting. Good rhetoric is better than this.(Original post by mournfulpirate)

Re: Oxford students lead the way on the recessionI know you had freely stated it. I AM NOT CLAIMING YOU HID IT. The only reason you are arguing against my point is because you go to Edinburgh. I'm out.(Original post by zara55)
