Is there such a thing as a "right to privacy" anymore?
This is an issue that I've been thinking about for some time now, with the advent of social network and the internet in general can people really still have a claim to privacy anymore?

I mean people freely give away their names, birthdays, occupation, place of study, relationship status' , travel history, a list of all their friends and family, as well as bookmarking their day to day activites.

If this infomation is publically availble surely people cant complain if its used by advertising comapanies, the police of even government for their own purpose as no privacy is being invaded if its publically availble.

Furthermore, can you really be claimed to being "stalked" if you make aware publically, where you are and what you're doing all the time?

The jobs of the police and even the intelligence services must be easier than ever, having so much infomation of citizens at the click of a button or two.

I think people only use the "right to privacy" excuse when something doesn't go their way.

This is from the levison enquiry sort of related!
Look what Paul McMullan had to say!

"In 21 years of invading people's privacy I've never actually come across anyone who's been doing any good. The only people I think need privacy are people who do bad things. Privacy is the space bad people need to do bad things in. Privacy is particularly good for paedophiles, and if you keep that in mind, privacy is for paedos. Fundamentally, no one else needs it, privacy is evil. It brings out the worst qualities in people. It brings out hypocrisy. It allows them to do bad things.”

    I don't think I agree! ;P

No, we are all potential terrorists so privacy for us is now a myth. Send a few e-mails or texts plotting to do something awful as an experiment and see how far you get.

It's a bit worrying that people confuse the EU with the ECHR. I'm pretty sure we not only co-established the Council of Europe but also helped draft that very Convention and the rights in it. And we then later incorporated it into domestic law with the HRA.

The EU came later as did the thing about countries being required to ratify the ECHR and talk of accession of the EU to the ECHR.

Obviously with the internet privacy is hard to achieve. However people can choose to be private by not using social networking sites and using alternative search engines to google

The right exists, it's just not exercised.

Read the recent threads about the prisoners voting and deporting the Muslim Extremist. People confuse the two things constantly.
