    Net Migration Still At 250,000 For 2011

    Immigration is at record highs despite Coalition promises to slash the number of arrivals.

    Figures released yesterday show that net migration in the first nine months of last year stood at 252,000 – the second highest level ever.

    The total, which is the number moving here less those going abroad, is higher than in the year before David Cameron took power.
    Despite the pledges I think immigration is here to stay. We have always been a nation of immigrants and thus a net migration rate of 250k is perfectly acceptable in my opinion. We are becoming more multicultural/multiracial like America and imo was necessary moving into the 21st century to do so.

    I hope Labour if they ever get back into power will allow this level of immigration to remain, incase the tories do get it down.

    What are the demographics of these immigrants? If they are 250,000 Ph.Ds then we should be happy. If they areunskilled we need to stop it.

    not too happy. aside from the water, services, food and housing issues;

    -the tories want high immigration to drive down wages due to competition
    -the importation of skilled labour makes it easier for businesses- but it doesn't help unskilled people who could previously start, and build up skills. no opportunities when you can bring in a ready-skilled migrant.
