been researching this for quite a while but I'm still pretty confused...do the armed forces give the state power because if the state is attacked by another country then they are able to protect themselves ?

Well the ability to intimidate and force other nations to implement policies is a lot easier with a powerful armed forces, an advanced military is also able to provide disaster relief to other countries which would give them a fair bit of international influence from a diplomatic point of view. If you want to go into more detail you could look at the various types of hard power assets and the abilities they give to a nation. For instance a strong naval section would allow a state to secure trade channels and set up naval blockades to apply pressure on another state.
