I'm watching the series and I've been told the books are very different and the main character is extremely unlikable so I've decided to steer clear of the books.

That and I'm bored of reading any vampire novel riding in popularity.

I originally read the first 3 books before the TV show started and enjoyed them. Recently, I re-read them and read the next 2, but I had to stop myself. I felt they were getting a bit ridiculous in the storylines.

I read them about 10 years ago and then re-read them recently. I enjoyed the original 4 books but the ones that have been released recently I thought were a bit ridiculous. Think that could be because they're ghost written though.

I love the books, nearly read them all now and still not bored. Would be better if whats in the book would be on the TV show. There's lots of stuff in the book that would be great on the big screen. The books quite seductive and damons character is far more evil.

I read all the books that were released prior to the tv show, and when I started to watch the tv show they were just so different I started to loose interest in the book storyline. It was just so different, though I do wish it had followed the first books a bit more. It was just weird following the characters through the show as well as through the tv show, it was like they were in a parallel universe or something how different they were.

iv read the first 4 and really enjoyed them, though im not too keen on the character of elena or stefan in them, damons much better and i wuite like the fact that they are different to the tv series. iv also read the first Stefans diaries book, which is a lot more like the tv show, so its best of both really i do need to read the rest of them at some point but that costs money and i have a mountain of other books lined up to read first.
