Convicted killer Luke McCormick given trial at Swindon Town: opinions?

Should clubs be prohibited from employing him? Can people who advocate footballers as role models be happy with cases like this?
Thoughts? -
Re: Convicted killer Luke McCormick given trial at Swindon Town: opinions?
He did his crime and served his time. He should be free to live his life and compete again now.
Thats what i would normally say.
But considering two people (actually children) are dead as a result of his stupidity and recklessness (drink driving), it just leaves a bad taste in the mouth to know hes out and able to play football again, just four years after the incident. -

So if he was a plumber would you rather he claimed benefits? What's the difference between a plumber and a footballer? Two men doing a job, two men doing time, two men completed time, one man allowed to continue his job, one man told he isn't allowed to continue his job as it's deemed 'glamorous'.

He served his sentence and the prison system releases people who are believed to have been rehablitated.
Everyone deserves a second chance. He'll live with the crime for the rest of his life.
Also if Lee Hughes can play again why can't he.? -
Re: Convicted killer Luke McCormick given trial at Swindon Town: opinions?Would you say that for a paedophile or a rapist? People have got four years for rape too. I don't know how long Ched Evans gets but I will await to see what happens if John Terry is found guilty of the racism charge and see if there are calls for have him dropped from England NT on a permanent basis.(Original post by BlueSmarties)

I'd rather he be executed by impalement or dismemberment actually, but unfortunately the ruling elite have a distorted view of justice. My issue is that, in some instances footballers are seemingly considered under the remit of "being a good lad" so I'd rather either the footballing elite endorse their moral compass (as invented by Adrian Bevington) completely, rather being used as a tool to get one over the Jones'. -

What good would punishing him further do? He has served his time, why shouldn't he be allowed to return to the career he had before?
If he was in a profession that wasn't in the public eye then nobody would care that he is returning to work, if he was a builder would it be all over the news that he was going to continue being a builder now that he has been released? No, nobody would care, but because his profession is one that is in the public eye it is suddenly a huge problem.
Absolutely pathetic that this is even in the news, he was guilty, he has served his time, let him lead his normal life once again. -

Re: Convicted killer Luke McCormick given trial at Swindon Town: opinions?
I don't think people are pissed of because he is a footballer. Its that he needlessly killed two children through his own stupidity and is able to carry on with his life after 3 and a half years. Just doesn't seem fair on the victims and their families that he isn't being punished hard enough. Its irrelevant that he is a footballer, however if I was an employer and I knew this information I would think twice before hiring him, especially if it was a role where he would be in the public spotlight.

Only 3 and a half years for causing the deaths of two children? Bit of a joke.

Re: Convicted killer Luke McCormick given trial at Swindon Town: opinions?
Yeah, the real issue here is the amount of time he's served. No sympathy for any idiot who gets done drink-driving, but if he did the full seven years, at least you could argue he's served his time and is justified in going out and building his life again. But getting out early for killing two kids and forever ruining the lives of a family? ****ing ridiculous.

Re: Convicted killer Luke McCormick given trial at Swindon Town: opinions?
I think the main problem is, what if he's really good? What if he gets selected for higher up teams, and wins major tournaments for them? The family of those two boys, who have already been majorly let down by the system which allowed McCormick out after just three and a half years, will have to see his face all over the TV and the newspapers, they'll have to deal with people singing his praises and him being seen as a hero when he destroyed their family. The needs and rights of the victims need to be put above the right of the criminal here. According to eyewitnesses, right after the crash he carried on driving until his car wouldn't go any further because of the damage, and then he sat in his car smoking, still drunk, making no attempt to find out how the family he'd just smashed into were. That doesn't sound like someone who deserves to be released after such a small amount of time.

It can be guaranteed that he was 'rehabiltated' the second he found out those kids were dead. The point of rehabilitation is that the offender doesn't re-offend, had McCormick got of with say a small fine he probably wouldn't have touched drink ever again.
The issue here is not whether he has been 'rehabiltated' but the fact he has killed to young children, destoryed a family and has only served half of a pretty light sentence. I assume he got charged with manslaughter, however I believe that if you drink drive, you transform yourself into a dangerous weapon and that should warrent a similar sentence to murder.Last edited by bestofyou; 27-05-2012 at 11:43. -

The fact that he hasn't served a substantial sentence is what really gets to me, especially as now he is going to be able to go back into his life, almost exactly the way it was before, like nothing ever happened. Those boys may have loved the idea of playing football for a living, which now they will never have a chance to do because of him. -
Re: Convicted killer Luke McCormick given trial at Swindon Town: opinions?
Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Jermin Defoe, Jermain Pennant (repeatedly), all players that have been prosecuted for drink-driving, they all got a slap on the wrist, a small fine and a few points on their license for doing the exact same thing as McCormick, they all had the same intention, the only difference is they got lucky whilst McCormick unluckily caused an accident, but for me they should all face the same punishment, a persons punishment should be set by their intent, not the consequence, in the same way I believe murder and attempted murder should have the same punishment, why is it then that McCormick deserves life in jail according to some people who will then happily applaud ferdinand, gerrard, defoe etc when they play?
He's not a threat to society and im sure he's spent every day for the last 3 years in regret, he made a stupid, stupid mistake but that doesnt mean he shouldnt get a 2nd chance.
