    Further Maths and A2s
I really want to study Maths & Economics or very similar courses. Potential unis are LSE, Warwick, UCL, Cass BS, and perhaps Nottingham.

Im in a pickle though - no university actually discriminates against Maths, Further Maths, and another subject (Economics), but will this work against me in the future? I'm planning to leave Politics and Physics to AS but this depends upon my grades this august.

I think these three A2s will be demanding enough, and considering the various other tasks that may need doing (UCAS, STEP, etc) is this a sensible combination?

Yeah it is a tough one

At my school FM is only allowed as an extra but I know plenty of schools who allow it as one of the 3

    Thanks for the reply.

Do you think Maths, FM and Economics at A2 with Physics and Politics AS makes a competitive candidate?

In my experience (Cambridge, as well as Warwick and Nottingham of those you mentioned), the Maths department couldn't care less what your third subject was. I expect the Economics department, with which I have no familiarity, are probably uninterested in subjects away from Economics and possibly Maths.

Further Maths A-Level is one of the hardest to do and you will definitely be competitive on a Maths & Economics course if you take it over Politics and Physics. In fact, Warwick especially, you will find the STEP entrance exam very difficult if you don't take Further Maths. Technically you can sit it (STEP I) but it's really tough if you're spending a third of your time on Politics or Physics instead of more maths.

With places like UCL and Warwick, you'll be getting high offers (especially Warwick, which for maths makes an offer WAY higher than seems necessary). So it'll be competitive, but taking Futher Maths makes Maths far more simple and will probably guarantee you an A* in one or both of them.

I took Maths/F.Maths/Physics and none of my university offers made any mention of Physics (always simply 'Achieve an A in your third subject'). With Maths & Economics, it'll probably be Maths, Economics and a third, but if you're concerned, ask the institution in question.

Your UMS scores are very important. If you're struggling in Further Maths, do Physics or Politics instead, whichever is stronger. I seriously doubt the universities are interested in exactly what you pick as a third, although I don't know how favourably they consider Politics.

    Hi~~

FM is definitely essential to success in applying to Economics(or joint with Maths) course at top universities, Economics is basically just Maths concepts, and Maths is just Maths. I can assure you that, even the universities said that FM is not essential or applicants can be successful without it, but that is BS really, but you can still success but chance is really slim especially you are taking it with Maths. Physics and Politics are both good for Economics course so definitely go to A2 (unless you have more A levels which are respected and hard). Some top universities requires more than 3 A level, or some with 4th additional A level, e.g. Warwick for Economics requires A*AAB for Economics (A*AA and STEP 1 or AEA Distinction for Eco&Maths) and LSE requires fourth pass subjects, but FM is highly recommended(when they say highly recommended, they mean if you don't take it, you are f**ked up unless you are a genius)
You also need some knowledge in Further Maths in order to know the answers to STEP 1 easily, they said we don't need FM to do STEP 1 but that is BS, they mean if you are a genius and knows loads of common sense and tricks in Maths, then you don't need FM to do STEP 1. I recommend you to do AEA to distinction instead of STEP, because it is much easier.
Offer is different because normally offer will just be A*AA or AAA etc, but the grades you actually need to achieve at AS and predicted grades are important, so you can't just think about meeting offers.
For A2 levels I recommended you to do Physics(Defo), Politics(unless you got another good one to replace it), Maths, FM + EPQ(Eco&Maths related) + AEA Distinction + something else if you got. Economics and Maths is very competitive, so you need to make sure you got the best A levels possible.
