    Dress Code: Smart Casual ??
So what exactly is Smart Casual?

I have a half day training session with a company for my Surveying Apprenticeship, and they said the dress code is Smart Casual.

I am thinking A plain Black or White polo top, Chino's and black vans? They are brand new so they don't look tatty.

Just looking for help, as I don't want to go too dressed up, or too casual.

    Help please.

I honestly wouldn't class that as smart casual.

I'd say more a nice pair of shoes with some very smart jeans or some black pants and a casual shirt is smart casual, just saying.

Smart casual is our dress code at work, and it just basically means a shirt, or a polo top with some jeans and some nice trainers.
It's smart in the sense you don't look bad, but its casual, so you feel comfortable.

There is so much confusion over this it seems.

    Smart means jacket and tie.
Smart Casual means you don't need a jacket and tie, but definitely no jeans, no t-shirts, and no trainers.

If you rock up in chinos, vans and a polo, I wouldn't be surprised if they called you a joker and told you to **** off.

    This usually helps:

That would help, apart from the fact it doesn't have smart casual as an example.

I would guess it's the same as business casual wouldn't it?

Obviously Smart Casual varies depending on the event...

Smart Casual to a job interview at a top firm; just go smart.
Smart Casual to a job interview at Tesco; polished shoes, trousers and a shirt/polo
Smart Casual to a restaurant; Nice shoes, trousers, chino's, smart jeans, something 'nice' on the top
Smart Casual to a leaving party at a nice pub; nice shoes, trousers, chinos, jeans, whatever you fancy on top.

    Accessories as necessary...

I don't understand why people can't dress themselves.

No not really, business casual is what investment bankers wear to the office. Its basically a suit without a tie.

Yeah as Rybee put it, it could mean a lot of things to different places I'd guess.
