    Are all salts neutral salts?
well just want to clear things up..

basically, i'm studying chemistry on my own in my spare time at work and got a little confused.

    basically:

A halogen and an alkali metal react to form a salt.

An acid and a metal react to form a salt and hydrogen gas.

An acid react with metal carbonates to form a salt, water and carbon dioxide.

An acid react with a metal oxide or metal hydroxide to form a salt and water aswell.

right, so they say a neutralization reaction is a reaction between an acid and an alkali in the correct proportions to form a neutral salt.

so are all the above neutral salts except for the first cause halogen forms a combination of acids when disolve in water so, it's not really an acid, i think:confused:?

so can someone please, make this clearer for me, plox..abit, just want to be clear.

To answer the title of your question: no not all salts are neutral in water.

You've given a list of general types of reaction so you can't say that one type will or will not give a neutral salt. It depends on the specific reactants.

right, so they say a neutralization reaction is a reaction between an acid and an alkali in the correct proportions to form a neutral salt.

    No, just a salt.

Take HCl and NaOH, they react to give water and NaCl (which is a neutral salt). However if you take ethanoic acid and NaOH, you get water plus sodium ethanoate (CH3COONa) which is not a neutral salt, it's quite basic.

    p.s. what's VVV 2012?

Depends if you mean pH neutral or charge neutral.

All salts consist of positive and negative ions in a proportion so the overall charge is zero, so they are neutral in that sense.

But as EVS said, they're not all pH neutral.

! With 10 warning points on his account I think it may be something of a wind up/lost cause
