Are these A-Levels okay for a career in Law?
    Heya!

Well, I'm looking to become a barrister in the future, and I was wondering if the A-Levels I've chosen (I'm still in Year 11, so I can change them) are what universities are looking for from Law applicants:

    -English Literature
    -English Language
    -History
    -Spanish.

I was also considering changing English Language to Philosophy and Ethics, but I'm not sure.

    Any help is appreciated!

I think it's a great combination - although they don't specifically ask for anything, they like analytical subjects, such as History and English Lit If you want to change English Language, go ahead as I'm sure either subject would be welcomed - just pick the one you like.

History and English Lit are great for Law.

I would advise that you change English Lang for Phil and Ethics because English Lang isn't very prestigious at top unis.

What unis you thinking of applying to?

Well I'm not quite sure, as it's a while away yet. But I'm possibly thinking of appyling to places like Oxford, Cambridge or Edinburgh etc.

Yea I would strongly advise changing English Lang as I think it's VERY low down Oxbridge's list of good A-Level subjects.

Maybe try doing a science instead or Economics? It's good to be a well rounded applicant but if you don't want to I understand.

I wouldn't advise dropping Spanish or History. You might get yourself into a position where you will find of those two particularly difficult and don't want to carry it onto A2. But you have to because you shouldn't do the two English subjects for A2 out of the 3 total. Plan and choose carefully just in case something goes wrong! I advise you to look up the requirements for the degree you plan on doing. Good luck!

    You should be looking at these uni's in this order;

    Oxbridge/LSE/UCL
    Durham/Kings/Nottingham/Bristol
    Birmingham/Warwick/Manchester/Edinburgh/Glasgow

Or a 1.1 from Leicester/QMUL/Exeter/Leeds/Sheffield/Newcastle if none of the above are possible.

I would recommend taking either maths or a science instead of English Language to show logical reasoning skills and to make your choices a little more diverse.

Thank you for the help, so should I change English Language to Philosophy and Ethics then?

EDIT: I'm not too good at Maths and Science, so I don't think I'll take them next year...

That would be a good idea

Philosophy is quite a respected subject

Make sure you're confident with your choices, no need to rush your decisions. If you want to make any further changes then you can use THIS list which basically applies to most uni's you will be applying to. Choosing subjects from the A1 or A2 categories are preferable.

Try to do Law as well. Some universities don't like this BUT it wil improve your performance at University if you study Law and a study by the univerisity of Bristol carried out in 2011 showed that the students who had taken Law at As/A Level where more satisfied in terms of finding it easier to start the degre.

    Personal Experience.

Whatever you do, don't do A Level Law

    It's a very soft subject

I don't think Law is seen as a particularly good choice. I think your choices are great I would change English Language though, just because it's a lot of English at the moment. Science would be good as previously said but I think Philosophy is a very respectable subject as well.

Good choice, but yep, change Lang for Philosophy, or consider something else - I chose Economics, which is awesome and has absolutely no maths in it (it's an essay subject at A-level).

Or not? You won't get into uni with it, so what's the point in taking it to make a course you're not going to do a little easier? You could say the same thing with business studies - it might help you in the first few weeks, but only if you get a place, which you probably won't. No one takes Law A-level at top universities, and they all seem to do fine. In fact, by definition they do better than the lesser unis.

How is Bristol itself as a law school? How about Reading?

Good choice of A Levels, although I'd say definitely change English Language for philosophy or economics or a science. It will make you a more 'rounded' student.
