I'm also going with Site 3 because I think that it is most sustainable to build a retirement complex there, keeps the elderly people integrated with society, and is the most suited environment for a retirement complex.
I agree with you here. Also, unlike the other two sites, site 3 has 3 places of worship which allows the eldery who are religious to pray and do religious things. This can improve quality of life and overall happiness of someone.

Attached is a word document that I found on the internet about exam technique/ how to answer the questions which I thought was quite useful in SDME (I took the exam in Jan, not retaking).

Is everyone taking the Key Themes exam on the 18th too?
    Attached Files

I'm going over everything because my teacher said both of the questions could be on the same topic (ie both on population or both on settlement). How many case studies are you learning in total? And are you learning like numbers of deaths/dates and everything or just the general idea of the case study?

Write EVERYTHING. I failed on higher I got a U but then I got 100% on the foundation when I retook it. What I did the first time was just write what I thought was the right answer and I was kinda vague about it. USE the resources booklet, it is your best friend in this exam. Constantly refer to it, if you think you have a good answer, read it again and say other peoples points of view on it. Mine was about flood management and stuff so there was questions about different places that had floods and lots of case studies. Think of different peoples points of views, such as a farmer, or someone who works in a city or something or someone who works in the government with that place. WRITE EVERYTHING. I used 6 extra pieces of paper in the retake.

that sounds sensible but it's just so long! i havent even started learning climatic hazards haha! Yes in that case im learning every case study. If you have the official OCR spec b textbook they should all be in there. I better get started :/

    Hi all

Added some new resources to the help site including a podcast done by a geography teacher somewhere in the UK. Resources are here:

    http://www.geographypods.com/june-2012.html

18th June exam revision stuff is here:

    http://www.geographypods.com/termina...june-2012.html

    Hope it helps

For the SDME ... site 1 looks good to me. Think about the scale of the ageing population and think about sizes of the sites. Think about the possibility of expanding the site in the future when the numbers of 85+ rises massively ... see population pyramid in 2050.

    Good luck with the revision

Hi I'm a bit worried I haven't done enough for this exam tomorrow, does anyone know if we need to know case studies for the last question? Also should we know about alternatives to retirement complexes? Thanks.

Yes I do, I have the paper, it didn't go great.

1a) Why do countries such as the UK have a rapidly ageing population? 2 marks
1b) Explain 2 benefits of having and ageing population. 6 marks
    2) Describe the changes of the population pyramids between 2000 and 2050. Explain why the population structure of 2000 may be seen as more sustainable than the 2050 pyramid. 6 marks
3)Use resource 3 and your own knowledge. Compare the disposable income for the over 65's against other age groups Suggest reasons why there are differences in levels between age groups. 6 marks
4)Use resources 4 and 5. Describe the positives and negatives of retirement complexes and explain how the development retirement complexes may be of benefit to the stakeholders outlined in resource 4.

The actual decision question. This is cut down a little, sorry, i am in a hurry.

5)Choose between site 1, 2 or 3 sown in resource 6. You choose which is best for Dunbar. Explain which option you think will affect the community of Dunbar least negatively and is most sustainable to manage an increasing ageing population.
    you must:
    state your chosen option,
explain why it is more sustainable than other sites,
explain any disadvantages of your choice
give a possible advantage of each of your rejected options.

This is my entire mock, I hope you find it useful.
Can anyone just answer these questions?! Bullet points would be fine. It would really help me!!!

1a) use res.1- living longer, lower fertility levels. Due to various reasons such as better healthcare, education of women etc.
1b) benefits- elderly volunteer in community, in charities etc so help socially. - often look after grandchildren while parents work- saves parents money on childcare and both can work (or if single parent they can work), so good for economy.
    2) 2000: low birth rate; bulge in middle- baby boom of 1950s-60s (after the war); then decline in each age group from 60+ as more people die as get older. 2050: declining birth rate; population more evenly distributed through cohorts (age groups); baby boom generation moved into old age. 2000 more sustainable- lower dependency ratio so less people dependent on working population to support their needs. Means more taxes paid and less spent on health care- elderly cost more nhs wise.
    3) good- on site medical facilities , suited to needs, socialise with own age group, residents feel safe. Bad- expensive, may promote social dislocation as people may move away from their community, or if quite far from town the residents may become excluded from facilities etc.
Res4- 1: more business and so money. 2: elderly move out of house so house price may go down as less pressure on Market- so he can pay less. 3: get jobs in complexes.

    Then I chose site 3

    Thanks! This really helped! XD

Also for the 16 marker last question, I keep putting stuff like "this is socially sustainable because.." and the other 3 sustainables in like every advantage and disadvantage. Is it bad?

And what are the 4 advantages and 2 Disadvantages of site 1?! They need to be economical, Enviromental and socially sustainability.

I think I'll be doing that a lot, so don't worry I think it'd be good to throw in a bit of different phrasing though, as it's marked on English commuication and grammar.

    I think I'll choose site 1 as:
    - It's away from the town, and therefore less vunerable to erosion. The groynes in source 7 could suggest that long shore drift is occuring, and therefore Dunbar is prone to erosion. This means site 1 is safest.
    - The contours show it's slightly higher up. This could be a nice view for the elderly living in the complex.
    - It will not get in the way of residents or ruin any views of the town.
    - It will be less busy than the town, and much calmer.
    - It's by the A1 (I think) so easy access.
    - Lots of land. Can expand in future.
    - A forest for walking in.
    - Maybe cheaper land as it's further away from the town centre.
    -Hospital close by.

    However disadvantages for 1 include:
    - Greenfield site- less environmentally friendly than the other options.
    - Furthest away from shops.
    - May be a blot on the landscape to residents already living in the town, as it's high up and will be seen from town.
    - May be noisy due to the motorway.
    - Will have to be all inclusive.
    - Uneven land, and also it may be windy.

I think the advantages for site 1 outweigh the disadvantages however, so I think it's the most sustainable of the three
