Re: GCSE OCR Geography B SDME June 2012
The following I found from an online doc.
Advice for the SDME.
General Organisation
• Exam is 1 hour long
• 3 sections background, options and Decision
• 5 questions in both higher and foundation paper (although foundation has a number of subdivisions to the questions)
• On both papers the students write in space provided in the paper
• Total marks for the paper is 40
• Teacher notes provide a massive help to the content. Student do not need to have huge amounts of own background knowledge. It is very similar to old DME in that respect
Background Section
• 2 questions here. On higher paper they are both 5 markers
• General introduction to the topic. The questions asked were very clearly hinted at in the teacher notes
• To get 5 marks students must develop 2 points on each question here. To develop the points they must make the simple comment and develop in their own words. PEE (Point, Evidence, Explanation)
• Send about 15 mins on this section
Options Section
• 2 questions here. On the higher paper they are both worth 7 marks
• The 7 markers are level marked up to level 3
L1 (1-3) 3 simple comments
L2 (4-5) 2 of the simple comments are explained in their own words - PEE
L3 (6-7) 2 the comments explained are linked back to what the question asks for – PEEL
• Overall my advice here will be 3 developed points linked back to the question
• Send about 20 minutes on this section
Decision Section
• 1 question here worth 16 marks
• Marked on 4 levels
• Like in the old DME will be based on 1 place and the students must follow the instructions given by the exam board
• Student must complete or will be limited by the mark scheme
• Students must do exactly what the questions asks or will be limited on the mark scheme – will say thinks like explain 2 advantages, must do 2
• Sustainability was used and students must know what this is. The questions focused on economic sustainability, if they did not focus on economic sustainability their answer on this limited to level 2 ( 8 marks). Must do what the question asks for
• Answers to get top level must develop points and link back to exactly what the question asks for - PEEL
• Spend 25 mins on this section
Overall Comments from the Chief Examiner
The best candidates did the following:
1. Managed their time and so completed all the paper
2. Explained what was seen in the resources in their own words
3. Could apply some of their own knowledge when answering questions (bringing in examples to help with the development of the points)
4. Linked ideas back to what was directly asked in the question
5. Understood what sustainability was and what the different part of this meant ( social, economic and environmental) -
Well they are could be considered socially unsustainable because the sometimes promote social dislocation by keeping all elderly people in one place and especially with somewhere like site 1 where the complex is quite far from the main part of town, this effect is seen. I am struggling with environmental and economic sustainability of the complexes though?(Original post by acsecnarf)
can anyone explain th sustainablity of retirement complexes in general? ( source 5)

Re: GCSE OCR Geography B SDME June 2012
thankyou!! hmm maybe you could say that it isn't economically sustainable as the present younger generation are going to face higher taxes and overall cost of living in future, meaning they may not be able to afford retirement complexes. This would mean there wouldn't be much business for the developments which cost alot to build...

Re: GCSE OCR Geography B SDME June 2012Yes!! The initial cost is about the same as buying a house, but it will be more expensive depending on the quality of the site e.g. type of facilities on site such as swimming pools and large gardens. But as well as this cost it is about £2000-£3000 a year for the service charge because there are support staff ect on site...(Original post by Maisy18)
Yeah that's a good point. Do you have to pay for retirement complexes then? Thi wasn't made clear to us.

Re: GCSE OCR Geography B SDME June 2012Thank you very much with your help ... Good luck in the exam xx(Original post by Arshii)
Hiya
I'm also choosing for site 1 too hi-5! LOL
But, you basically need to know 2 big advantages of the site and do a PEE (point, evidence and explain) chain on it. An advantage for site 1 is that it is a very large site, approx. 1/4km2. This is good because you will be able to build a large complex on the site and there is plenty of room to expand the site if it is successful. This will be economically sustainable for the town.
After explaining the 2 advantages which is worth 6 marks. Then, write the reason for rejecting the others (6marks). Then, disadvantage for your site chosen (2 marks). Lastly, another option that would choose...
Hope that helped x

Re: GCSE OCR Geography B SDME June 2012disadvantage can be the lack of facilities for young people/economical active which may lead to them migrating... & Good Luck with the Exam(Original post by sultan b)
what is a disadvantage of the retirement complex
-
Re: GCSE OCR Geography B SDME June 2012Centre of town which can lead to different types of pollution e.g. noise , vandalism ect(Original post by sultan b)
What is a disadvantage of site 3
Also my teacher said a disadvantage is that it is near a historical site (dont know why thats a con )
Land is expensive
The green lines on the map show that anyone is allowed to walk on their site at any time and day e.g. if the elderly people are sitting outside the public have permission to be on their land
hope that helped as i dont really have much info about site 3 as it aint one of my option -
Re: GCSE OCR Geography B SDME June 2012A disadvantage of site 3 can be that its too far away from the city and transportation, meaning you would be able to visit your family that often. Also, building a retirement complex on site 1 is destroying the the large flat land that is currently used for farming, therefore its destroying natural farmland instead producing carbon dioxide during it's construction....(Original post by sultan b)
What is a disadvantage of site 3
Hope that helps
Good Luck on the Exam

Site 3 is on the coast and from picture in res 7 can see there are prevention methods already in place to stop longevity drift which suggest erosion is an issue. So building on site 3 could put residents lives at risk, and if part of complex falls down as cliff is eroded this will have to be rebuilt, so is economically unsustainable. However, you could invest in further method to stop erosion, although this will cost more.(Original post by sultan b)
What is a disadvantage of site 3
