GCSE AQA English Language 29th May 2012 REVISION BOOK
Hi!
I have this exam and i'm dreading it. In the mock i got a B with no revision so hopefully i will get an A or A* in the exam.
Does anyone have any tips for revising? There are 3 past papers so i think i should just learn how to answer questions from looking at the mark schemes.
From school i brought a book called "AQA Gcse English and English language revision workbook higher" by Esther Menon and Peter Buckroyd.
I have been trying to find the mark sceme for it online as in the book it says "You can find answers to the activities online" except i cant find them! Does anyone have a link? I really need it!
Thanks and good luck -

I have the same problem as you - I'm dreading this exam
Last year everyone in our school done Foundation and I got 83 UMS - C (84 UMS is a B), a couple of weeks ago we done a mock paper I got 61/80 - just into an A* without revising, but my teacher isn't strict, so she mustve been nice to me
Anyways I keep revising, and coming back to TSR checking for new threads, I really need a good grade, one problem of mine is the structre, for question 1, do we give 8 indivual points with quotes, or 4 fully developed paragraphs?
It would be nice if anyone helped me too. -
Re: GCSE AQA English Language 29th May 2012 REVISION BOOKI have the same exam aswell. I got an A on my coursework which was only 1 mark off an A* so i need to get a few marks into an A* to get an overall A* (an A would be OK for me aswell though because its quite hard!).(Original post by A193)

What I've learnt is that in this exam, DON'T analyse! (especially for the first 3 reading questions!!!) Just write what you SEE...state the obvious!! I know it sounds like bad advice but trust me...I always make the mistake of stating the feelings of the writer and analysing the language but they say 'WHAT CAN YOU LEARN...' so write what you just read ...about 4 observations very well explained would be great for 8 marks
Hope that helped for the reading section atleast...
P.S: Time yourself carefully! If it says spend about 15 mins on the question, SPEND ONLY 15 MINUTES otherwise you run out of time on the writing section which is worth the same marks in only 2 questions!!
Sorry for writing an essay but I hope its worth it

Good luck everyone! -

make sure to:-
-reference to text, small quotes dont paraphrase!
-show your understanding of the text
-infer from the text, what can you deduce from it -
Re: GCSE AQA English Language 29th May 2012 REVISION BOOKI got told that you answer depending on the question. For example, if the question uses specific keywords such as "what, list, identify" in which you are just being asked to pick out the main ideas of a text which you should just basically answering the question according to 'PE' which is Point, Evidence. Whereas if the question has words like "explain, how, why! then you are being asked to explain the effects of language or explain the effects of presentational features which then you are required to answer the question using "PEE" which is "Point, Evidence, Explain". Also, the number of marks available indicate how many different points you must include! I.e (8 Marks) means 7-8 different ideas.(Original post by A193)

Also when analysing the texts, you will be expected to recognise and be able to comment on: Purpose ~ what is the purpose of the piece of writing? Why has it been written? What does the author intend to achieve? Intended audience ~ who is the piece of writing aimed at? What proof can you give of this? Message ~ what is the piece actually saying? Presentation ~ how is the message got across? What ideas, details, langauge, linguistic and presentational devices are employed to make the piece successful?
I hoped this has cleared up a few things and helped. -
