WJEC G2: What are the issues of the migration of refugees and asylum seekers?
Hey, so ive got my G2 exam on wednesday and im just going through the syllabus and there's a bit of it that we havent been taught:L The question is:
What are the issues of the migration of refugees and asylum seekers?
- The causes and consequences of flows of refugees and asylum seekers into developed economies
- Housing
- Repatriation
- The attitudes and values of migrants and hosts
- Human rights
I dont have any case studies and definately couldnt talk about this for 10 marks
Any ideas would be really appreciated

Re: WJEC G2: What are the issues of the migration of refugees and asylum seekers?Hi, I have the exam on wednesday too. Basically we went through all the definitions so asylum seekers, refugees, repatriation, students, illegal migrants and economic migrants. For viewpoints, all we wrote was some people wanted close relatives to be able to migrate whilst others only want people who can benefit the UK to be allowed in. Also manchester, burnley and bolton have stopped taking migrants due to racial tensions. The human rights bit is just that the UK has signed up to the united nations declaration of human rights which means they take refugees, Apparently we also need to know a historic reason why refugees may seek asylum so we did the civil war in Rwanda in 1994 which killed 500,000 people.
The rest was just what happened to refugees and why they came to the UK. The UK is the most popular refugee location due to the NHS, education, quality of life ect whilst the top three countries we get refugees from are Iran, Iraq and Zimbabwe. Most arrive at ports or airports and are then dispurse across the country or put in camps. They can cause tension and have langugue barriers. In 2008, 25 thousand people appllied for asylum and only 19% were granted access.
Having written that down, I hope that comes up on wednesday. But I do agree with you, for some questions it is hard to think of ten things to say, I always get to seven and cant get past it. Hope this helps. -

Re: WJEC G2: What are the issues of the migration of refugees and asylum seekers?
I'm seriously dreading this exam! we did about how it can cause racial and ethical tension and also we have rwandan refugees as a case study where they used the locals land and deforested trees so left locals with few resourses and also theirs issues with human rights and if they are actually fleeing persecution etc

Re: WJEC G2: What are the issues of the migration of refugees and asylum seekers?
Our historical case study was Somalis to Butetown in Cardiff as a result of the Somalia civil war and a good current example is refugees from Syria fleeing to Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon. The consequences for the Butetown case study is a loss of population from Somalia (skilled workers), which has adversely affected attempts at reconstruction after the civil war. The positives are that money in sent home and the migrants serve an important role in maintaining publicity and media attention of the civil war. In the destination country there are language barriers created, conflict and resentment from locals (racially motivated riots in Wrexham), effects on local schools and health care, cost of processing the applications. I hope that helps for the case studies. We weren't taught this bit very well either so I've had to find it all myself.
Good luck :-) -

Re: WJEC G2: What are the issues of the migration of refugees and asylum seekers?ageing population Question was amazing!yes the ghettos question was weird and the section 3 questions were as mysterious as ever!although the 3C part was nice-limitations in your investigation i put about time constraints and personal bias when interpreting secondary data!(Original post by firebolt)

Re: WJEC G2: What are the issues of the migration of refugees and asylum seekers?I prefered G2 3b to G1 3b and i quite liked 3c as limitations and how to overcome them is pretty easy(Original post by sushiking16)
