Question to British students :)
So, i'm going to start my degree next year and i guess in the university i'm going to the majority of students are British. Well, i'm from Brazil and i'm a bit scared i'm going to be a bit left out. I might be wrong, but i usually only see British people hanging out with British people. Of course people are different, but i'd like to know: in general, do you like being friends with people from different countries or do you prefer to stay around British people only?

If these are British people in Brazil, it's probably a language thing - if you can speak English you will be fine.
If it's British people in Britain, that's because the vast majority of other people are British, so it's just statistically far more likely that their friends will be predominantly British.
I have plenty of friends from other countries, the international students have no problem fitting in. I just have more British friends because the British people outnumber the internationals by a large amount.
I don't make friends based on nationality, just on whom I meet and whether I like them. I can't be friends with foreigners who I've never met. -
Re: Question to British students :)
I was friends with a really diverse range of people.
It's fairly common to see people stick to their own cultural group when making friends. It's natural to find those things we're familiar with in a strange place. I totally understand that. All you can do is try to make friends and see how it goes. -
Re: Question to British students :)Coming from an international student, British people are RELATIVELY friendly. Your friendship circle will mostly depend on who YOU decide to hang out with. Many international students tend to kinda congregate together, usually through the various international student groups. But in general, I don't think British people care that much about whether they hang around other British people or not. Due solely to proximty though, British will tend to hang with other British people, and internationals tend to hang with other internationals.(Original post by hannaaahlima)

Re: Question to British students :)
If you speak English I doubt you'll have any problems really. The main reason British people don't socialise with non-English speaking people is because they tend not to really speak any foreign languages. Also in my school there were some foreign students (part boarding) who would be mid sentence talking to you and then suddenly turn away say something in their mother tongue to their friends and laugh and then carry on. I found that a bit rude.
I guess it depends on the person, me personally, I'd love to meet international students as I'm a languages and cultures student myself. I don't struggle to get on with people from different countries and I won't be the only one. I'm sure you'll be fine

Re: Question to British students :)I don't think british people purposefully only hang out with other british people and exclude other nationalities. If you see that it's probably just statistically more likely in England that somebody's friends will be predominantly british. I had friends from Turkey, Brazil, France, Italy, Slovenia and HK whilst doing my undergraduate degree and loved the experience of having friends from other countries. It depends on how much you socialise and make yourself available (I find it's difficult when people stick to their own cultural group, whatever that is, but anyone who tries to socialise/ be friendly will usually get the same back!)(Original post by hannaaahlima)

Re: Question to British students :)
It's difficult to talk to most international students because they huddle in groups speaking a different language.
Also, most the people on my course go to the local university, so they don't see the point in making friends with people who live far away, especially those who are international.
It's really a toss up on the people on your course, and how willing you are to integrate with everyone. If you're friendly, there's no reason why you should be left out. UK universities are full to the brim of international students. -
Re: Question to British students :)Which uni? Have you considered looking on TSR for that university's thread and seeing if you can make any friends through there?(Original post by hannaaahlima)

Re: Question to British students :)
im an international student as well, just wanna share what i've observed thus far.
in general, the british are a friendly bunch. one of the reasons you feel that british people usually hang out with british people is because they do. it's england, there's so many more british as compared to foreigners, so naturally chances are they'll be hanging out with other brits. another reason is probably their culture. foreign students come from cultures different from that of british people, so it's natural to feel more comfortable hanging out with people from similar cultures as it feels more familiar. of course, there'll b a very small proportion of british students who think they're better than everyone else, just dont bother about them. if they're that shallow, they wouldnt be good friends anyway.
it's not difficult to have british friends, in fact, my closest friends here are british. but after all you're in a foreign country, u have to step out of your comfort zone and talk to different people, not just the british, rather than expect them to come to u. join societies and meet people with common interests, it's much easier to make friends that way.
so i say dont worry too much about it. it'll be a great experience either way. since coming here, i've made friends with so many different nationalities, some from halfway across the world from where i come from. im sure u'll do fine as well. -
Re: Question to British students :)At my last university, two of my best friends were Cypriot and Catalan. If you make an effort to speak to people and plan things outside the course, they will reciprocate. Unless they're dicks.(Original post by hannaaahlima)

Re: Question to British students :)
I go to UCL, which is VERY international, so I've been able to observe internationals who have integrated and those who haven't.
One of the main reasons there can be a division between British and international students is the language difference. Many international students will converse with people of the same native language, which can put British people off from making an effort. Of been in my department many times where I've been the only British person and I've been with a group of, let's say, russians who are sitting and chatting in Russian. Obviously, its nice to speak in your native language, but in social situations it is a big cause of division and exclusion.
On the other hand, those students who have integrated tend to be ones that are willing to speak more English.
Ucl is very international, and from my experience, some people integrate and some people don't- but it depends on what type of person you are and whether you're willing to step out of your comfort zone and not just stick to what's safe- as in, not just running and befriending the people who speak the same native language as you
