...Have never been considered particularly "cool" bands either in their time or now - I mean they may be great bands 'n' all but they're hardly the epitome of coolness imo

I would sayy.. The Stones (back in the 60s anyway), The Doors, The Velvet Underground, Pixies, Stone Roses, Ramones, Sonic Youth, Pulp. Not sure about modern bands - maybe coolness is easier to ascribe in retrospect

I think the Stones seem to be getting the most votes here, I've noticed. Not disagreeing, wouldn't put them number 1, but they're certainly up there in the top 5 or so anyway you slice it.

I reckon the Stones will take this.

My definition of a cool band is one that outstrips time, pretentiousness, fashion and has completely utterly all encompassing awesomeness.

So I think this leaves one band left.

Jagger's recent affiliation with Lopez and Maroon 5 lowers them down significantly. I think my suggestion will win.

I once thought this. But I get the distinct impression that's he's getting wrapped up in his own pretentiousness, he knows he's good, people keep placing him up there with The Greats and seems like he's getting too concerned with creating his own legacy. The White Stripes were so simple and groundbreaking. *sigh

I'd say Floyd were always considered cool. But you're right about the rest, Fleetwood Mac especially..hehehe..I love them but they've never been nor will be cool. Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground are truly 'cool', you're right. I think Nico's involvement makes the latter slightly stronger.

Wow, I haven't said cool so much since I was probably 13.

The emergence of Mick Jagger in several contemporary pop music videos is a bit of a letdown. As is the god awful repetition of their t-shirts.

But these are minor scrapes on what is, imo, the embodiment of edgy British spirit that lives to this day.

I'd say Floyd were always considered cool. But you're right about the rest, Fleetwood Mac especially..hehehe..I love them but they've never been nor will be cool. Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground are truly 'cool', you're right. I think Nico's involvement makes the latter slightly stronger.

Some very interesting iconoclastic views there, and I agree.

My personal opinion is still the Cramps, having thought about it. But I still think the Stones will take it by the time the thread's done.
