How to deal with muscle soreness?
I haven't been to the gym in a while and I thought I'd go back to get into shape and I started again 3 days ago.
Waking up the day after my first workout was okay, second day was bearable, on the third day it was still bearable but after the third workout I was in too much pain.
Tried sauna/steam/jacuzzi/hot shower but nothing worked. Taking the day off today to rest a bit, but I'm still in so much pain that I can't even shower properly because my arms usually kill me if I try moving them, can BARELY move when I'm sleeping it's just really bad and I've been to the gym a few times but never been in so much pain.
Can anyone help me? Should I rest for a few days or should I start going again tomorrow? -
Re: How to deal with muscle soreness? After your workout, make sure you stretch really well, 30seconds + for each stretch. Should prevent some of the soreness from tight muscles. If you're exercising muscles that are aching because you've worked them out, it isn't going to help at all to exercise them again, so try and rotate your routine. Massage can also help if you have a chair, or know someone. Rest for a few days if you're in that much pain.(Original post by hamza7)

I find that if I'm in agony after a workout, I give myself a day of rest to see which way it's going to go. If after a day the ache starts to subside (even just a little) then I let myself work out again.
If it doesn't get any better then I would wait another half a day.
Is it just a severe 'post-workout ache' or do you think you've damaged yourself in some way ? -
Make sure you stretch before and after a workout. Muscle rub works wonders if you still have pain afterwards.
Having some pain shows that it is working your body hard enough for change to occur, so if you don't feel a bit stiff etc after a workout, it's time to change your routine.

Re: How to deal with muscle soreness?I've never stretched after a workout, none of my trainers told me to do so and I'm not sure it'll help that much right now lol(Original post by sugarspellitouttt)

Re: How to deal with muscle soreness?
Buy a foam roller. Or if you have access to PVC pipe, make one. If it's that bad then yeah, ice bath or really cold shower is good, so I've heard. Never needed it though.
Stretching doesn't help with soreness but it helps a lot with other things.Last edited by tooosh; 28-05-2012 at 23:08. -
Re: How to deal with muscle soreness?Hmm I don't think you can use a foam roller on your shoulders/chest(Original post by tooosh)

And why would I/someone have access to a PVC pipe haha.
I'll try the cold shower, screw having an ice bath. -
Re: How to deal with muscle soreness? You can. Lie face down with the roller under your chest and your feet against a wall, pull your arms back. Push and pull with your legs to move it. You might have to get a bit creative with the pull part. I'm sure there are ways for shoulders and other parts of the chest, google it.(Original post by hamza7)

It's just a PVC pipe, it's not exactly uncommon. If you don't have one then go to B&Q or something.
