Mine cost £425, BUT it has broken no less than 3 times! I no longer wear it as it just keeps falling apart. Which is very sad because my partner worked very hard to get the money. My mum has donated a lovely ruby and diamond ring which I love and is actually worth quite a but more! We're going to get me an eternity ring when we have a baby to make up for it

I paid about £1007 for an incredible incredible white gold solitaire ring from an online jeweler in America called James Allen. The same ring here (almost the same. Same diamond specs but slightly different setting design) costs £550-650 more in the UK. They have free shipping to the UK so I made out with a great deal. It was also very very easy. Much easier than I thought to buy the ring. Their service reps called me back on their expense when I had some questions.

DO NOT THINK you need to pay 3 months salary. That is bull****. Pay whatever you can afford. If you can only afford £100, pay £100. If you can afford £1000, pay £1000. If you want to save money, do some research and maybe buy online like I did. Some people think it's weird, but we buy everything else online. Books, electronics. Why not rings?? http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement...litaire-rings/

as my college teacher told me, who made up the rules about how much you should spend? you should spend however much is reasonable to you, and shows how well you care. 3 months wages dont mean squat if you make peanuts.

I litterally would not spend more than £10 on a ring. What a load of material BS rings are. Why should you have to buy an exspensive ring just to show you love her? Material gifts don't express love.

Infact why do you need to get married in the first place? It's a silly old religious tradition where most people spend a decent amount of money on it, but the way these things are priced end up having a pretty average day in some dreary chapel, then have a second rate dinner in a shoddy run of the mill hotel or rugby club/function house and. Eat crappy supermarket party food and drink cheap alcohol with a bunch of guests and relatives you barely even know nevermind like then spend a long weekend in a 3 star crappy resort and call it a honey moon. Then at the end of it you are forked with the bill! I don't bloody well thing so! If i had to choose between spending £10k (or however much it costs) on a wedding I'd rather put that money into a fantastic 10 holiday for just the two of use. Literally 10k would buy you an absolutely amazing holiday, all expenses paid in some beautiful remote white sandy beach where the weather is warm, the sea is cool and the food and drink is to die for. Treated like a king and queen for 10 days VS treating a bunch of people you don't give two ****s about to a ceremony and some dinner? I know which one I would choose!

Best way... don't tell her how much you earn, then use 3-4 weeks salary to buy a fairly decent one and she won't need to know how much you spent on it

A few months back I knew a bloke from China who personally flew into London to spend £900k on an engagement set, had a rather fancy ring, a pair of earrings, a necklace, an ankle chain and several 24k nuggets to be given as "dowry" to her parents. Only problem is his gf said NO...LOL

I was wondering what people feel would be an acceptable amount to spend on an engagement ring.

I realise that it depends on expendable income and perhaps even age, but perhaps just an insight into what people think would be regarded as a good amount to pay for one, as I've been looking into it and I really don't know where to start

    Thanks to all replies
I read somewhere it should be the equivalent of 2-3 months salary.

    Challenge accepted.

The figure should be 1 months salary.

Assuming you'll be in a proper job when you propose, (£30k) that'll be £2,500.

For those of you saying that it's 3 months salary are talking total rubbish.

personally i think its the thought that counts, i would want something that i can wear every day and not be frightened im gonna get mugged for it, so maybe something simple in white gold/silver with a small stone in (even cubic zerconia would be lovely on the right ring) i wouldnt want my Bf to spend more then about £300 on it.

Because 9 times out of 10 it's what makes her truly happy.

Personally, I don't see the point in jewelry, and I think the same as you about wedding costs etc. but it's not about me (as gay as that sounds).

    yep lol

narh in all seriousness it does depend on what the girl likes though i mean no point buying her a 10k ring if she preferred the 1k one

Three months salary makes me uncomfortable because I don't want a £5000 ring, and he knows that! I'd be constantly convinced I was going to get mugged for it and I think you can get some lovely rings for much, much less. I'd rather it have sentimental value than be ridiculously expensive.
I know when my boyfriend has looked/tried to sneakily gauge my likes and dislikes before - he's been looking in the £500-1000 range.
Just out of interest, are you buying him anything of equal or similar value?

I'm not getting stuck with a bridezilla... If she doesn't like a 1 month salary ring, I'll just find a fiance who does.

3 months salary? Seriously?! Is this before tax or after tax?
I was thinking more along the lines of about £250 - £300, which is nowhere near...

Looks like I'm dying alone then...
