Shouldn't matter if you love each other, love > expensive ring!
I completely agree - though you'd look like a complete tool if you did earn a decent amount and still went by this princple

I actually got mine designed for her. It's a white gold band with two small round rubies on either side of a (slightly larger) diamond. The whole thing cost about £3K- which, as a student, really broke the bank. (Not being sarcastic there, I was saving for about a year.) I've booked a trip to Paris, with a table in Disneyland in late July this year. The plan was to take a knee just as all the fireworks go off.

However, I'm now single and feel a bit foolish. Anyone want to come to Paris?

I would never spend 3 months wages on an engagement ring. In an ideal world that would be about 10k ¬¬ 10k is a lot of money..

The figure should be 1 months salary.

Assuming you'll be in a proper job when you propose, (£30k) that'll be £2,500.

For those of you saying that it's 3 months salary are talking total rubbish.
1 months salary is equally abritrary

Obviously it's arbitrary, that's not the point... it's about what's reasonable. It's not a rule, just a guide. All they're saying is that for someone with a proper entry-level job (25-30k/year), that's about 7k, which is a lot of money for a ring, particularly when you're most likely planning a wedding and a honeymoon afterwards. You can get beautiful ring for 1-2k, if you know where to look.

I've told my boyfriend that I'd be happy with a Haribo ring (especially because I really like Haribo rings ), but failing that, just a simple, cheap, plain one - being engaged to him (and more importantly, being in love with him) is more important than a piece of jewellery to me, the ring is more like the traditional side of it, the ceremonial side of being engaged if that makes sense

I don't get it with engagement rings. People talk about paying for quality but a lot of the time it seems like paying for the sake of it.

You can white or yellow gold rings with diamonds and/or other gemstones in the range of a few hundred pounds, from several jewellers.

Then you can go somewhere else, see a ring that looks the same, made of the same materials for several thousand.

The only reason I can think of to spend more, is you want a custom made ring - but clearly the materials don't cost that much, so I think you're just being ripped off if you pay thousands. I'd rather have the spare cash!

as a general rule it is three months income.
but tbh everyone should spent what they see fit.
this is after all a once in a lifetime investment (ah maybe not anymore)

I'd say £500-£1,000 is enough. I'd feel very uncomfortable wearing one much more expensive than that as I'd worry about losing or breaking it, or someone stealing it. Although, I'd want to choose one because of how it looks rather than the price.

    Re: Engagement ring price?
My husband proposed without any ring, and then later we went together to buy me one. He was flat broke, he really was, so my engagement ring was about £20 from a discount jewellers shop. Gold plated cubic zirconia thing. But it's pretty, so who cares that it was cheap?

My wedding ring cost about £150, so more than the engagement ring, but still not tons. That one is white gold with actual diamonds lol.

These are my rings. The one with the criss-cross at the base of my finger is my wedding ring, the other is my engagement ring. Like I said, they're pretty, so cost is irrelevant.

(They're both too big for me now that I've lost weight, so they slide around a lot - which is why the engagement ring has slid up my finger).

I want a 32k tiffany princess cut engagement ring !

I doubt anyone would ever buy it for me though haha
lol. I would like to have a tiffany ring as well which is probably about £10,000.

I've come to think that when I get engaged I dont mind a cheap-ish ring (£500-£700) and then later on when we are richer getting my dream ring which is in the £1000s.

Blimey if I end up getting engaged they sure will save a lot of money- I want to use my Great Grandmother's ring.
If you can afford it fair enough but I don't see the point as long as the ring is nice

    Re: Engagement ring price?
I think it completely depends on the individual and the circumstances.

One person may think a 15K ring would be appropriate.
Whereas, another may think 1K is dandy.

My dad didn't spend anything on his Engagement ring to my mum, as it was his Grandma's. Which I think is quite cute and cool...
(It's a very nice ring, and worth at least 5K) But the point is, it has sentimental value to it!

I know someone else who got a shabby ring from a market stall in London for something like 5 quid, however, it was the same market where he'd met his fiance, and so it meant a lot to them both!

    Re: Engagement ring price?
    **** that for a laugh.

Maybe it's because I don't like marriage in general, but that just seems obscene to me. Why spend so much on a dinky little band that goes around your finger? It's pointless! For that money you could get yourselves a decent little car, go on an amazing holiday or get a hot tub or something. Why waste it on a little peice of metal?

3 months salary? Seriously?! Is this before tax or after tax?
I was thinking more along the lines of about £250 - £300, which is nowhere near...

Looks like I'm dying alone then...
Hahaha, aww No, I'd way rather my fiance bought me a cheaper ring and kept the extra money for the wedding, or you know... food or rent or something. It really is the thought behind the ring that counts in this case - the thought being "I want to marry you!"
