    GCSE English language 29/5/12 model answer
    Hi everyone, I have composed what I feel would more or less be a model answer to a number 2 question, any thoughts?

    Now read source 2, the article and the picture which goes with it called, Up, up and away- the day that armchair travel really took off by Valentine Low. Explain how the headline, and picture are effective and how they link to the text

    [I don't feel the actual article is necessary, but If anyone would like it, I'll provide a link ]

    At first glance, the picture in the article is impressive, if not shocking. As the reader initially views it, they are not entirely sure what they're looking at, hence the relevance of the title. The boldness, combined with the size of the letters in the title, quickly draws the readers attention towards it, away from the picture. 'Up,up and away' flows very well, and is in a way a phrase that is not uncommon, however not in this context. Usually, it's used when speaking about things such as helicopters, planes and birds. This somewhat adds an element of expectation, and when followed with by the word 'armchair' is surprising - however not entirely unexpected, due to the picture that was viewed beforehand. The words 'travel really took off' have two meanings. In one way, it quite literally implies that travel is taking off, via an armchair with balloons, travelling into the sky. On the other-hand, it could mean that travel is being taken to new limits. I feel that this double- meaning was intended by the author, as the title is fairly short, meaning that she'd want to bring about maximum effect with the small number of words used.
    Following on from the title and the picture, the text itself instantly relates to both of them, with the opening words reading 'As the young stowaway says in the film up ' Up, of course being a film in which a house takes off, solely by using balloons - similarly to what is happening here. This helps to link the text, picture and title together. The text is quite a large pierces, with arguably a lot of unnecessary information, like how the picture shows an unnecessary amount of ocean. Or does it? When we're told of the risks involved with his flight, we do feel slightly anxious, and that combined with the vastness of the ocean, makes it understandable.


    This took me 10 minutes, how many marks do you think I'd get out of 8?

    I think you will get at least 6, but probably 7 or 8 marks in my opinion. I did this question a little while ago and got 7 marks and from what I can remember these are some points which you may want to consider:

    the colours of the balloons. it gives it a bold look and draws attention. It also seems more magical.

    a fairytale feel with the balloons and with the up, up and away...

    the perspective of the picture makes the man look tiny and although there is humour it makes it clear that there is dangerous elements- the strand balloon floating away by itself also supports this.

    took off relates well to the article because typically to take off refers to the more conventional way of travelling via a plane, or perhaps even a rocket could be described as taken off. The really re alliterates the rareness and brings slight humor, suggests it would be unexpected.

    the dash after the away brings a slight pause which makes the away sound longer. This length can then be linked with the height of which the man travelled or the distance.

    That's all I can remember...

    I'd say 7. Leaning towards 8. Depending upon your examiner.

    I'm not entirely sure to the structure of you answer. The content is correct but our English teacher taught us to do 4 small paragraphs that each has a point, quote, comment,link to text (and short explanation) and quote of text.

    Sounds rather long but each "thing" is meant to be really short and simple.

    I'm now officially confused on how to structure my answers 1 day before the exam.

    This is what we have been guided to do in our exam

    Q1) 4 Inferences paragraphs (Point, quote, comment on inference)
    Q2) 4 presentation paragraphs (as shown above, point, quote, comment,link to text (and short explanation) and quote of text.)
    Q3) 4 Inferences paragraphs (Point, quote, comment on inference)
    Q4) 4 Paragraphs, Each has a point, quote, effect, compare comment, quote, effect - different/simmilar

    Section B
    Q1) The shorter text to be around 1 side to 1 side and a half

    Q2) The longer text to be around 1 side and a half, to 2 sides.

    And If we have time ( Which I won't) to check over and add more paragrahs to areas which some of the paragraphs might have been clumsy.


    For example on Question 2 section A. On one of my mocks (Source was T-rex Sue) I wrote:
    "The picture in the article shows how large T-rexes are to give a visual image to the reader. This links back to the text - "The world's Largest T-rex". This is done to emphasise on it's size"

    This is meant to be 1/4 of the paragraphs for Q2 and be worth 2 marks. I know it's really simple which is why I'm confused on the structure of answers.
