Carpets...WHY
I think this is an English thing, and I've just recently noticed it..
Why are there so many flats with wall to wall carpets?? It's ugly and unhygienic. I wish it would stop.
I have seen a flat online (with great wooden floors) and I asked to view it, and the agent added "I should point out that the apartment has been carpeted throughout now". WHY
Maybe it's cheaper, but why would anyone choose it when they have wood floors already? Is there are any way I can make the owner go back on this?

Re: Carpets...WHYBut there is no need to walk around barefoot in your own home anyway, if you wear slippers, what's the difference?(Original post by CJM13)
Comfort? I like wooden floors, but prefer a carpeted bedroom as it feels "cosier".
Carpets are more difficult to clean and you can't wash it with soap and a mop.
I once visited a house in the UK with carpeted bathroom floor. EW

Re: Carpets...WHYBuy your own house and do whatever the hell you like. If you want to live in a house owned by someone else put up with how people like things in this country.(Original post by Aconcernedparent)

Re: Carpets...WHYI like to walk around barefoot. In fact, it would look decidedly weird if I was just wearing shoes.(Original post by Aconcernedparent)

Re: Carpets...WHY
It's probably because I'm not English, but I agree with OP. I don't like carpets. Hardwood floors are beautiful and so much easier to maintain.
Plus, if you like carpet, you can always buy an oriental carpet or a nice fluffy one from IKEA (the ones that you can move around as you wish and pick up and take outside to clean). I feel sick when I think about how much filth just gets soaked up by carpets. Even if you want to clean a spill, you'd have to do so immediately because otherwise it will stain permanently and it's just such a hassle.
But hey. Different cultures, different customs. -
Re: Carpets...WHYThat's a bit rude. You might not even end up being the buyer of the house/flat. It doesn't cost anything to get rid of the carpet anyway.(Original post by Aconcernedparent)

Re: Carpets...WHYI own my own place back home which I'm renting out and it would never occur to me to carpet it.(Original post by TheSownRose)
Carpets are much nicer - I wouldn't want to be walking around on wood.
And no, I'd say you probably can't 'make the owner go back' on the way (s)he wants to decorate his/her home.
I find it strange because the flat I'm viewing has been listed for quite some time (hence why the pic of it is old) and they have even lowered the price because they haven't had an offers (it's expensive for a 1 bed). I assume the owner chose to carpet it to make it 'more appealing', which seems really strange to me! Oh well different culture (or lack of taste...). I obviously would offer to pay if he was to agree to change the floors again, otherwise there's no way he'd agree. -
Re: Carpets...WHYSeriously, you're trying to rent a place in the UK and you're going around making facetious remarks about our taste in flooring?(Original post by Aconcernedparent)

Most of the rooms in my house have wooden floors, mainly because my dad wanted to lower our risk of getting asthma because he has it pretty bad. In my opinion the only good thing about wooden floors is that they're easy to clean, they're horrible in the winter. But what about stairs? I can't imagine having stairs with no carpet on, wouldn't they be easier to slip on?
