How the Coalition spends your money
HMRC have released an online tax calculator today which is quite interesting:
I put in the figures for average earnings - according to the latest Labour market statstics, average total pay is £464 per week, this is the type of result you get

So a person on average earnings pays £5187.52 tax per year of which £1727.44 goes towards welfare, £902.63 towards health, £51.88 on overseas aid etc
It also shows you where government gets its revenues from:

And the breakdown tells you what your marginal and average tax rates are, how much you are paying at each rate etc.

Re: How the Coalition spends your money
This surely destroys the left wing's myth that somehow if we cut government spending there will be no hospitals, roads will be full of pothols and schools will have to be shut down. With a third of the average taxpayer's money going to other people who do not work it is no surprise the UK, like much of the West, has become a welfare state.

Re: How the Coalition spends your moneyYou do realise that people who are in work also claim benefits as well?(Original post by ish90an)

Re: How the Coalition spends your moneyWhat else should we do with all those pensioners?(Original post by ish90an)

Re: How the Coalition spends your moneyLook what's wasted on the EU.(Original post by Martyn*)
Moreover look how much money is wasted on wars, useless initiatives, and quangos. -
Re: How the Coalition spends your moneyI am told that we give loads of money to the EU. But how is the money used? Does it all go to the bureaucrats in Brussels?(Original post by ukip72)

Re: How the Coalition spends your moneyThe majority of the EU budget goes on the Common Agricultural Policy, ( the main recipients being the French). The waste is well documented though, MEPs expenses, first class travel for officials etc. Basically unelected bureaucrats like to look after themselves.(Original post by Martyn*)

Re: How the Coalition spends your moneyEverything else...(Original post by Aj12)
What would other under government income count as....
There are probably more than 100 taxes and duties in the UK. There are also alternative sources of income: rents, Crown Estate revenue, fees for various things etc.
Very little it seems. Government admin is relatively small, as is defence. Nothing like welfare.(Original post by Martyn*)

Re: How the Coalition spends your moneyI don't argue against foreign aid but when it comes to the EU any contribution is too much.(Original post by james22)
Looks like the EU and oversees aid are far less significant than a lot of people apear to suggest when arguing against cuts. -
Re: How the Coalition spends your moneyWhile that may be true, the picture shows that it is insignificant compared to everything else. When you take into account what we get back the net loss is probably negligable. Not saying the EU is good or bad, but financially it isn't a problem at all.(Original post by ukip72)
