    Blue hair!!
Since my exams are coming to an end, I was thinking about dying my hair blue
The only thing is, I have black hair and I have no idea on how to dye it because I'm not sure how the colour will come out :/
    Any help?!

you're going to have to bleach/dye it blonde before you dye it blue, or it's not going to show up.

If you want it really vibrant blue then you're going to have to bleach the hell out of it. This will make it look bright, but (from years of having bleached/dyed hair myself) takes a lot of maintenance with roots and all that and diminishes the quality of your hair. As you may guess, I'm no lover of bleach.
Do it if you want, but just now that it's permanent and if you don't like it you're going to have to grow it out (or carry on dying it to your natural colour).

Also, I suggest directions hair dye. I used to use it loads. It's semi-permanent and does fade, but it's somewhat cheap for how much you get, and the colours come out dead bright

What bleach do you use and where do you get it from?
Ad also the dye, could you get in in superdrugs or one of those little emo shops?

I haven't bleached my hair in ages, but I just used to get it from Boots. However, my hair is naturally blonde, so it didn't need much in the way of lightening. If yours is really dark you might have to bleach it twice (and slay your hair forevz) or get it done professionally. It's gonna take some punishment :P

I just used to buy the coloured dye online. I don't think you can get it from the Directions/La Riche site any more (except in bulk) but plenty of online shops still sell it. I've always had fairly short hair and managed to get two or three full head dyes out of one pot. You can keep it for ages and don't have to use it all in one go like lots of dye packets on the high street. Also, you can mix colours (not sure if you're meant to but it didn't do me any harm...)
Otherwise, I think some New Look stores sell stargazer dye or something. My friend uses that schwarzkopf live colour stuff, which is available pretty much everywhere.

You need to strip all the colour out with bleach or similar... someone at school is doing this, her hair is dark brown, and waas dyed dark red, now it's stripped, its bright orange, as in, reeeeally orange, i dont like her some it's funny
but yes, strip the colours out, then get a good quality blue dye, ask your hairdressers which is best too :P

I had to bleach it from black to blonde (Went ginger obviously), and then dyed it with "La Rich Directions" in Turquoise. Not gonna lie, it is an absolute ballache to have. You have to dye it 1-3 times a fortnight, It is then expensive to maintain because I had to buy 2 or 3 pots a fortnight at £5 a pop.

Indeed, but it is a pain to have :P

Also I worked in a supermarket cafe at the time, so I wore a hat & my manager wasn't bothered. But 6 WEEKS after I'd had it dyed, a woman from HR comes marching after me asking me what I've done to my hair. Pointed out I'd had it like that a while now so clearly wasn't a problem

I am sure a at least the male half of the population appreciates the effort
Also what you chose to do with your hair is non of other peoples business, but good to hear that it was no problem.

I have had pretty much ever colour. Here is a foolproof guide.

Step one: PREPARE. Make sure you have ready some intensive repairing conditioner, some clothes/towels you don't mind ruining

Step Two: SHAMPOO your hair, DONT condition, if its feels like straw thats ideal right now. Dry thoroughly.

Step Two: BLEACH your hair. Jerome russel B Blode ( boots, superdrug etc) do one for dark brown hair, you want a pretty strong one like that if your hair is dark.wash after appropriate amount of time.

Step Four: CONDITION with your super repairing conditioner. Leave for AT LEAST a day before doing anything else. ( not only will it do more damage the colour just wont take as well over freshly bleached hair)

Step Five: Shampoo hair. dont condition. a straw like feeling is awesome right now (if your hair is rough its more porous and will soak up the dye better) dry thoroughly.

Step Six: Put the colour on your hair. (some brands of blue include Directions, Manic Panic, Stargazer, usually available from places like blue banana or whatever "alternative" shops you have) wash after appropriate time, condition.

    DONE!

Also a lot of people swear by putting a little bit of the colour in with their conditioner every day to keep the dye brighter.

    Good Luck

Blue is the worst of colours for fade... it's a tough one to pull off if you want it all over...

But if you really want it, then it's going to require a fair amount of bleaching.

Do not full bleach your entire hair. Instead bleach bath it (google for instructions on how to do this, it's basically a watered down way of bleaching that damages the hair far less.) For it to be light enough to take a blue, it must be very very pale, so you're going to have to bleach bath several times over several weeks (or maybe even months!) to get it light enough without your hair falling out basically...

After your hair is light enough use a blue veggie condition based dye such as Directions (La Riche) or Manic Panic all over the bleached light colour. After conditioning, rinse with 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water to prevent rub off and dye fade.

In order to keep bright and 'creative' coloured hair bright you're going to have to completely commit to a different hair routine. As I said, blue fades like HELL. You'll need to reduce your washing to 2 times MAX a week and use specific conditioners and shampoos to keep it bright (if you can not shampoo at all, don't. It strips colour.) You can add parts of the blue veggie dye you used to your conditioner to keep the colour brighter.

After that, you're going to have to maintain your roots and lengths of colour. This basically needs to happen as long as you can bear having your roots grown out. 6 weeks is pretty average. Very 6 weeks you'll need to bleach your dark roots away to blonde (you can use a full bleach for this if your hair is good condition) and then blue fully all over. This can take a fair few hours but it's possible if you have the time!

If you don't think you're up to all of this but still want something interesting you could consider streaks or a fringe. If you have a full fringe you can have the under part of your fringe blue maybe, with your dark hair over the top. To do this you'd just have to full bleach that part of your fringe until it's light enough (might take a few applications over a few weeks to get it pale enough) and then blue over that. Much less maintenance and still interesting! You can do the same with streaks around your hair, though the less streaks you have the less maintenance.

There are other colours which will be far more forgiving than blue if you can bear it. Blue and green fade out the fastest.

If you need any help feel free to ask me. I have bright Ariel red hair with a plum purple fringe underside and streaks around my face. It takes a lot of maintenance and I now was my hair only once a week, but the condition is still very good as I care for it best I can. Every 6 weeks to bleach my roots, colour my purple bits and all over red takes about 3 hours and costs around £10.

From a maintenance POV, streaks or dip-dying would be a better option, no?
Guess it depends how dedicated the OP is.
