There are assignments and coursework yes, but no one will chase you up on it and you certainly won't get a detention if you forget to submit. If you don't hand it in, you simply get a zero for that assignment. Which might not sound like a big deal, but it might significantly drag down your overall module mark. And remember that you're paying a small fortune for your degree so it's definitely in your interest to get the best possible mark you can!

I haven't had anything compulsory like that for economics other than coursework, but for tutorials we generally get a few questions set and it's intended that you work through them yourself before the tutorial where the tutor goes through them.

Yeah i had some unmarked tasks for tutorials... do a 10min powerpoint about 'x' for next week sort of thing. Might as well do them as it gives you a focus for the reading you need to be doing anyway... Plus the lecturer will probably be more receptive if you need to ask for help if you've engaged with the tasks they set you.

Well... kind of. You can get unassessed assignments and courseworks which don't count towards you module score but will be marked and feedback will be given. Plus they might tell you a special question which they strongly suggest you do for H.W.

However, like the posts above me stated, these things are not chased up if you do not hand it in.

Well they give you recommended reading pages. They expect you to read them. It's up to you whether you decide to do it or not.

Yes, on my course we're given weekly "tutorial work" that needs to be completed each week (compulsory) and then we go over it with our academic tutors. This also accounts to 10% of each module, on top of that we have coursework and lab reports
I'm sure Economics degrees must have something similar.

University is nearly all homework in as much as there will be very few lectures (lessons) and they are usually not compulsory, but you are expected to do the majority of the studying, reading, making notes, writing essays etc yourself. You have to keep on top of what is marked, ie you have to do as it is examined work; what you need to do in order to practice for exams and which staff expect but they aren't going to chase you for, and then what you need to read in order to keep up with the course.

There's not really any homework in the style of school and college. But you do have to read up on seminar topics and prepare for discussions on a subject in a seminar group. And it's in your interest to do this as it is expected you do the prepartion for seminars, because you might look/feel a bit stupid being asked to discuss a point you don't know anything about.
