You're in for a tough time, I really enjoyed having other people to bounce ideas off in my further maths class this year. Make sure you are actually ready for it and prepared to put in the hours if you want to succeed, it's not easy.

I hear its possible but you need to be pretty able at maths to do it.

Yup, going to be doing almost all of the full A2 next year (sitting FP1 on Friday).

I actually prefer it, I get to choose what I study, when I study, the pace I study - it's great

Just make sure your teachers know you're doing it, so you can go to them with questions and such - can be very helpful!

That's what I'm thinking! What exam board is yours on? I'm on MEI

My target grades at AS are both A's, and I feel as though I've got them. not trying to sound big-headed, but the quality of students at my school isn't brilliant, and they always bounce off me for help and all that It can be done though.

Also, my school offered maths and further maths separately, and not like some colleges do AS and A2 maths in the first year, and AS and A2 further maths in the second year

    Hi there OP,

I have done further mathematics independently for 1.5 years now and if you have a good hold on your A-level Maths and good Further Mathematics books then you should be alright in doing Further Maths. That said, it is always good to have a teacher/another student doing Further Maths (as someone has rightly said in the thread) to get help and ideas. You will get stuck on some of the topics, not because you're not able to do it, it's because learning independently is a lot different to being taught it and you may not be able to understand all the bits just by reading off the textbook. Even meeting up with someone every now and then to go over some parts that you are stuck on, helps immensely.

It's taken me this long because i have to juggle full time work with Study and even though you make your own timing and work at your own pace, i would recommend you do a little bit everyday. Even just an hour will help a lot.

Plain old OCR for me have you asked your teacher about the Further Maths Support Programme? Google it, it's very useful. Basically you get online lessons for the year - the school pay for it and then claim the money back in the same way they do for all of your other A-levels.

This is great advice! I'll definitely ask about the support programme! Thanks

What do you think about doing C3 and C4 in january, along with M2 (for FM), then doing FP2 and possibly DE in the summer?

You sound perfect for further maths , i was tempted to take it last year but didn't and regret that now.

Good luck, I've done it at A2 this year and struggled so much.
I got an A at AS, but this year it's about 10x harder. Struggling to get a B.

I did FP1, M1 and NM for AS, and I'm going to do FP2, M2 and one more that I'll decide on later, either DE or M3, depending on whether or not I like M2 how did you find them?

Also, did you find it harder because you had 4 A2 units?

If you're good at physics/mechanics, do as many of them as you can.
FP2 is definitely the hardest (pretty sure everyone will agree).
I find M2 harder than M3. Decision is good fun, but some people hate it, it's easy to lose a lot of marks for silly mistakes.

I'm not doing physics AS, but I am picking it up next year. I got a middle B at GCSE with the coursework being marked down from an A to a C due to it 'not being of high enough demand'. And I also got 77% UMS on M1 and I really thought I'd screwed up on the exam. I feel I could possibly do better on M2. Would physics AS help in M2&3?

AS Physics doesn't help with M2 at all, it on such a higher level. You shouldn't really be looking at AS physics if you want to self study further maths. Further maths is difficult but also very enjoyable. This year I have done D1, D2, M1, M2, C3, C4, FP1, FP2, FP3 (Living the dream as they say). M2 was the hardest and least enjoyable but by doing it it made M1 really easy. Doing C4 makes C3 much easier too and doing FP2/FP3 makes FP1 a doddle. Pick which units you enjoy most firstly and secondly units you can be confident about going into an exam.

I'm only picking up AS physics due to the fact that I need 12 hours a week at college, and maths and chemistry only give me 8. I also want to study chemistry at uni, and that involves rather a lot of physics. Wow that's a lot of exams!
