GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussion
I'm pretty sure a majority of year elevens in the UK have sat their English exam this morning. How did you find it overall? Personally I ran out of time in paper 1, didn't manage to finish last question, whereas I fully elaborated on the other questions as well as on the Paper 2, which went quite ok, I think. Does anyone know what the standard grade boundaries are for an A and B grade?
P.S Does anyone else think that ONE HOUR to do 4 big questions in Paper 1 is NOT LONG ENOUGH to answer them properly? I think WJEC board haven't thought this through when they established the length of the exam. It should be AT LEAST 1.30h. -
Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussioni agree not enough time is given if you choose to complete question 1 selctin and locating 10 mins is enough. however for question 2 it requires more explanation and question 3 you need to look at persuasive features. like you i did not have enough time for question 4 i barely wrote anything for that one!(Original post by Memphis93)

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussion
however paper 2 was more friendly, and the time isnt so bad. writing a letter is generally fine, and the guide just asks you to describe and show off your writing skills about a toursit attraction. deffo did better on paper 2, with paper 1 not enough time to finish everything properly! kind of frustrating!

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussion
On the letter one I completely screwed up! I wrote it like an article and wasn't very formal, i'll probably be marked down loads for that.
Did anyone else wonder what kind of drugs the examiners were one when they decided to base an entire exam paper on foxes?

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussionHahaha, my thoughts exactly! IT WAS ENJOYABLE WEREN'T IT?! :P I elaborated on the stupidity of Xfactor and how it allows people to make fools of themselves in front of the entire nation and stuff like this. I wrote 4 pages on that. Paper 2 was definitely better than the paper 1, though.(Original post by ~*Holly*~)
I ran out of time on Paper 1 too, and I agree, I think it's ridiculous that we're expected to finish it in one hour. Paper 2, on the other hand, I found surprisingly enjoyable
As for grade boundaries, I don't know, sorry.

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussionI know exactly how you are feeling. I feel like I rushed through the question 3 and a part of 4. The reason for this is that invigilator happily announced 15 minutes left till the end of the exam when I was just finishing up the 2nd question on paper 1, so kinda rushed through the question 3, and barely wrote a few sentences for question 4. I don't feel right about that one as I've probably lost quite a lot of marks, considering the grade boundaries are RIDICULOUSLY high (32 for A, 28 for B) where it clearly should be maximum 23/24 marks for a B, which is stupid.(Original post by pawandeep)

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussionRight you are here, the WJEC board seems to be out of line sometimes. Well I'm glad we had an exam based on foxes rather than something else. Did you do the exam in january as well? If you didn't, we had a whole paper 1 based on bicycles, which made it difficult for me to elaborate on, and as a result I ended up being 2 marks off a B. It was a tough exam overall. Nothing compared to the one we sat this morning.(Original post by lukeface)

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussionErm... The first one was something along the lines of 'look at the first page on Edwards article-how does Edwards say that foxes have become popular'(Original post by pawandeep)
anyone remember what the questions were? for paper 1?
-look at what he says
-look at how he says it
Hope that helps! -
Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussion
It was so annoying, I wrote about the wrong extract for question 1 and then had to cross it all out and start again after wasting 10 minutes. After that then I had to go extra fast so I'm not sure if I really added sufficient detail for the questions.
Does anyone else also feel that they repeat themselves from other questions for question 4 when showing contrasts?
Unit 2 was good though

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussion
I sat Unit 1 as an early entry last year and scraped a B, the rest of the school basically failed so we re-sat in January and most improved, I got an A.
Some people still re-sat today (the third time, unlucky!) and it sounds like the exam hasn't gotten any easier. I completely agree with you all, the 1 hour time limit is incredibly short. Extend it by 15 minutes, that's what I say.
I feel for you guys. My Unit 1 was over and done with ages ago but today's exam sounds bad like all the others
Unit 2 was fine today. -
Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussionTHANK GOD, IM NOT THE ONLY ONE! I ran out of time on Paper 1 as well, I was on the last question and only did the threats foxes have on humans paragraph. Paper 2 was quite easy. I think WJEC take the mick basically giving us 1 hour to do 4 questions. I agree should be 1h 30m.(Original post by Memphis93)

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussionWell join the club here. I'd rather much have done the exam with the AQA board, and struggle with poetry than be limited to one hour exam and **** up questions or in the worst case scenario, didnt manage to finish some of them.(Original post by matty123)
1 locate and retrieve information (very wierdly formatted
)
2 analysis of pursuasive techniques questions
One comparison question which I did not have enough time to finish

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussionI did exactly the same thing with the first question, I stupidly looked at the boy next to me and saw him rapidly highlighting away on the text on the opposite page so I thought to do that too until I realised it said look at the resource material... Somehow I managed to have enough time because I must've really sped up my writing! I found myself repeating Q4 too, I think it's cause there were lots of points made on Edward's text for example, but they were all the same one... Let's just hope for the best on results day.(Original post by HerroKitty)

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussionthank god im not the only one mate! it seems like many people on this forum are concerned about the time we are given, paper 2 was manageable, question 1 is locate and retrieve fine. question 2 is also taking this from the text but expanding on them in P.E.E. format, and question 3 is supposed to be on persuasive features. no complaints about paper 2. not enough time for paper 1 and question 4 deffo only got 1 -3 marks. are you sure for those grade boundaries? 32 for an A?(Original post by Memphis93)

Re: GCSE WJEC English Language Exam 29/05/2012 Post-exam discussionYou need to get at least BC to maintain your B overall(Original post by Trepton)
What do grade do you think i will need in the exam to get a B overall im on a high B for the 60% that i have already completed, and i need the B to get into 6th form :/
