Re: People that go the gym...Depends on your gym? Look for puregym near you, they have everything and it doesnt have a contract. Besides admin fee you just pay like £16 or £17 a month. Its open 24/7 so its cheap. There are a few new ones opening up, if you can join one of them, you can essentially get really cheap memberships like £10.99 a month.(Original post by number23)
Do you pay a yearly membership or pay each time? I just want to use it for three months over the summer so thinking of just paying the £5 rate everytime, instead of getting a years membership. What do you think?

Re: People that go the gym...
I pay monthly.
Surely whether to pay per visit or not depends on how often you're planning on going? I go 6 times a week so at £5 a time that would be £120 a month which is way more than the monthly membership. But if you're only planning on twice a week you might be better off paying per time (although that would be one expensive gym). -
Re: People that go the gym...
I just signed up for pure gym. It is £17.99 per month with no contract. This includes access to shower, changing room and locker facilities and over 220 pieces of equipment. It also includes access to around 40 classes a week including pilates, yoga, spin, zmuba etc.
The gym is also open 24/7 so if you get up in the middle of the night and can't sleep just head down to the gym
They also charge a £25 sign up fee but if you use the following code during sign up, you don't get charged a sign up fee
PGB18
They do day passes for arounr £4.99 and 3 day passes for around £7.99 but I think the monthly fee is a bargain since there is no contract and you can freeze your membership at any time and cancel at any time.Last edited by Anazoth; 29-05-2012 at 18:01. -

Re: People that go the gym...
The gym I go to is an excellent, weights-orientated, gym that isn't part of a chain, so my answer might not be the 'standard' gym membership that you're enquiring about, but you need to decide what you're using the gym for.
If you're occasionally going to use the facilities, i.e. pay per use in order to go with mates and play football/squash etc, then pay per use is probably the better option. If you're intending to do any actual conditioning or strength work, then this payment option is far too expensive as you'll need to be going more than 'on occasion'.
Your best bet is a monthly contract. As has been mentioned, plenty of gyms offer this without a tie-in contract of 6/12 months. It tends to be the health club gyms that tie you into 12 month contracts. I pay per month with no contract, which is more expensive than paying per month for a fixed 6 or 12 month period but gives me greater flexibility to opt out/in case I move etc. -
Re: People that go the gym...£25 is quite expensive.(Original post by number23)
Im mainly looking for regular light exercise to keep healthy really.
The gym im looking at is 25 at month for gym, steam room, sauna etc
So £75 for the whole summer... if i get a job ill probs go for that
Do you actually want to use the steam room and sauna?
I know lots of people, myself included, who at one time or another have gone to a gym with a steam room/sauna because it seemed like a great bonus and worth the extra money, yet never really used it after the first week's novelty wore off. -
Re: People that go the gym...i like the idea, and im not sure they do any other packages as well.. but it is quite pricey i agree(Original post by Scoobiedoobiedo)

Re: People that go the gym...
I'm with the YMCA for £22 a month, which only covers up to 3:30pm on weekdays and any time on weekends (though it doesn't seem to be open very long then). This is making me think I'm paying too much... but the gym is £6.30 per session if you do PAYG so obviously the monthly membership is better for me, even if I only make it in once a week!
