    Ab initio languages at university?
Hi, I'm currently looking into different university courses involving Spanish/Hispanic Studies. I think I'd like to do joint honours with an ab initio language, but I don't know which one! I'm a bit worried that I'll choose one, and then realise it's not really for me once I start my degree, especially as I've never studied a non-Romance language before (my language learning experience is pretty much limited to French and Spanish)...At the moment, I'm considering Italian, Portuguese and German, but would be open to other suggestions too! How did those of you who have taken up an ab initio language at university find it initially? And how did you go about choosing your ab initio language in the first place?

    Thank you very much!!

Re: Ab initio languages at university?
I'm doing Spanish/French and ab initio German but don't start the German element until September (2nd year) so I don't yet know how that's gonna go. I wanted to do 3 languages so all except one of my Uni choices reflected that. I picked German as the ab initio language as I thought it would be the most useful of the Euro langs and fancied the idea of a non romance language.
    Hope this helps.

Great but I hate essay work - have a couple of modules which are essay based - language, culture & identity and socio linguistics which I won't be sorry to loose! Last exam looming but it's been good. I speak Spanish so that's been fine and my french has improved dramatically. Let's hope I get on ok with German!
