Re: Loss of "meaning" in popular music?
I used to agree with you, as most of my favourite artists are of the older generation and are known for their deep meaningful lyrics, and I would only listen to them. But then one day I thought, lighten up why not, in all aspects of my life...and now whilst I still enjoy meaningful songs I also love random dance tracks just because they're fun. Just forget what everyone else thinks about the music, forget why it's popular and just try to see the lighter side to it. It's a much better way to live.

Re: Loss of "meaning" in popular music?
Pop music is all about making money. Most of the artists don't write their own songs and probably don't even care about the lyrics as the way they look seems to be far more important. What I don't get is why so many people laugh at Rebecca Black when Friday isn't much different to a lot of other pop songs. Look at these lyrics by Black Eyed Peas

They've used far too much autotune and the days of the week are randomly in there. Is it really any better than Rebecca Black? -
I acknowledge my examples were not great, I used them as they are the bands I commonly taking the most criticism. I know there are much better examples, rage got in the way a little aha.(Original post by Bulbasaur)
I see your point OP, and I agreed until you used those bands as examples of good music. In fact, they are some of the bands I'm pretty disillusioned with and are proabably a part of the problem of decreasing "quality" of music if you like. If you wanted a good example, I think something from Rush (you probably don't even know who they are, no offence), Pink Floyd, The Manic Street Preachers or even John Mayer would back your point up far more, particularly when these actually combine good music with meaningful lyrics. Your examples are mediocre at best, to be fair.
Now that's over with, I'm not actually saying that there's anything wrong with listening to this sort of stuff, I do myself (though not really those bands in particular, some are probably worse). But if you're going to be elitest about it, at least make your pont valid I guess.
Pretty much I guess. The 90s would be an ideal decade for "now". But it's got to the point where the top 40 represents a minority (though this is probably due to the fact it is the same minority who actually pay for the majority of their music!)
But again, I'm not going to pretend there isn't some brilliant music still out there. Some of my favourite bands are very modern. Take the Reign of Kindo for example (hardly anybody knows them), they formed just a few years ago. Another obscure example, a blues band called Vintage Trouble formed fairly recently, it's just that a lot of "good" or "meaningful" music tends to be hidden away...
As for the point about rush, I don't understand why you'd assume I've never heard of them, of course I have!

Re: Loss of "meaning" in popular music? The meaning of Stupid Hoe is the expression of anger over the rise of the price of Freddos.(Original post by Entangled)
Meaning is subjective. I'd take issue with the subjects, myself. -
Re: Loss of "meaning" in popular music?
I think the key thing for me with the pop music industry is that it's fun and I don't take it seriously BUT the lack of meaning in songs just seems to me to be because you have writers who churn out song after song for groups and artists who then just record said songs.
