I have been kicked out of a class because I skipped one lesson, what should I do?
Update: I went to personally apologise and explain, and I have been allowed to continue the class.
Sorry, I hope this is in the right category but I couldn't decide where it should go.
I missed a lesson today because I have been extremely tired, stressed, and homesick lately, and couldn't face going. So I used the time to get some other jobs done that were on my mind. However, my professor saw me walking while I was supposed to be in her class, and has emailed me to tell me that she and another teacher have decided I can no longer be in the class. What's more, she saw me in the library later with someone I was preparing a presentation with, and thinks that I saw her and ignored her, when I genuinely didn't see her at all.
I admit that I probably deserve it for skipping her class, and I have done my best to apologise. I think she is willing to discuss it with me and give me a chance. However I can't tell her that the reason I wasn't there is because I felt stressed and needed a break. I'm hoping she will take me back but I don't have a good reason. I told her it was personal and I didn't want to say.
I should mention that I study at a university in Japan, and it's probably perfectly legitimate for her to do this, because they treat students like children over here.
What's my best strategy from here? Should I make up a reason?Last edited by kat91s; 30-05-2012 at 08:45. -
Re: I have been kicked out of a class because I skipped one lesson, what should I do?Shove it right back in her face and ask her what was she doing when she was supposed to be teaching you. She can't have been teaching if she saw you walking, so she was doing something wrong as well, which you can use as blackmail material.(Original post by kat91s)

Re: I have been kicked out of a class because I skipped one lesson, what should I do?Is it really? I feel like that doesn't explain why she saw me walking past during her lesson.(Original post by Thorax)
Why can't you tell her the real reason? It's perfectly legitimate excuse.
I feel like I've made such a bad impression on her, and I don't know if I would want to take the class anyway knowing she thinks less of me now. The worst thing is that the other teacher involved also teaches me for other classes, and I'm worried it will affect those too. They don't have anonymous marking here...
Luckily I was taking it as extra credit, but it means that if I drop it, the pressure's on to pass everything else.Last edited by kat91s; 29-05-2012 at 15:57. -
Re: I have been kicked out of a class because I skipped one lesson, what should I do?
Write a written apology explaining everything, the homesickness and even the reason why you were walking about and forward it to the other teacher too. If you're a good student then she's probably just angry and a proper apology is just needed, but if this has happened before, perhaps that was your last chance.... but try it anyway, there's no harm... also for the time being, and especially if you are let back in, earn some brownie points by helping that teacher with jobs, hold the door open and be very very very very nice...
Good Luck!

Re: I have been kicked out of a class because I skipped one lesson, what should I do?Firstly, it is absolutely rubbish "blackmail material".(Original post by When you see it...)
How is that ridiculous. If the prof is saying it is wrong for her student to be missing, then the student has every right to complain about the prof being missing.
Secondly, who says the professor was missing for the class? Maybe they saw her through the window? Maybe they had to go and get something and saw her then?
Thirdly, if she wasn't in the class but had arranged cover (how else would she know she wasn't there?), then the professor has done nothing wrong. So going back to the first point, that is useless material to blackmail someone with. -
Re: I have been kicked out of a class because I skipped one lesson, what should I do?I was making a suggestion to the OP. If any of the above are true, it is a useless suggestion for sure, but if none of the above are true she can use it and it might work. What is not helpful is you aggressively assuming that the OP is in a certain criteria (like the ones you described above) and trying to refute my advice when it could well be helpful. Neither of us know very much about her situation, but suggestions may be helpful. Not making suggestions however can never be helpful. I'm not even having this debate to be honest, my comment wasn't directed towards you.(Original post by callum9999)

Frankly, if they had the time to watch you walking or preparing a presentation, they clearly weren't giving a great deal of attention to their teaching.
I would argue though that it's your time to do with as you see fit. Almost undoubtedly, they have no right to say that you can't attend class, because it'll be in your agreement with the institution that they provide the teaching. They could deny it if you're being unruly, but not if you decided simply not to take it up one day.
Students should be working a fair bit independently, and that may well mean prioritising certain tasks over others, and they should appreciate that.
Finally, if you are at university, or an institution where you're paying money for your education, you could always pull the (personally disliked) card of paying for them to provide a service.
I would be understanding of their situation, but they do sound like they have it so badly wrong.
And of course, feeling ill and homesick is a perfectly legitimate reason for not feeling up to class. On that note, perhaps there is someone in the university or students' union you can talk to who will have some advice and support to help you through

Re: I have been kicked out of a class because I skipped one lesson, what should I do?Maybe I phrased it a bit harshly (if so, sorry) but it categorically is absolutely useless blackmail material. If the professor wasn't there but there was cover, then it would have been pre-arranged or approved. There is categorically no way that could possibly work.(Original post by When you see it...)

I didn't give advice because I thought it had been covered pretty well by others. Apologise to the professor and explain the homesickness etc. If that doesn't get anywhere then complain to someone higher. There is no need for blackmailing whatsoever, not to mention it being illegal... -
Re: I have been kicked out of a class because I skipped one lesson, what should I do?
This seems a bit extreme. Have you been getting bad grades and having work in late etc?

What if the proff saw her walking past her classroom window? That way she would be in the right place, doing what she was meant to.(Original post by When you see it...)

Re: I have been kicked out of a class because I skipped one lesson, what should I do?
I still resent the fact that because I went to get a cheese sandwich and stood in the same queue as the Professor I had to go to a 2 hour class I had until then been planning to skip. IT WASN'T EVEN THAT GOOD A SANDWICH.
