Biology or Sociology?
Discussion for A-Level students and for those choosing their A-Level subjects.

Biology or Sociology?
My other choices are Maths, Economics and History. I want study Law at university. I would have liked to have taken English, but it's at the same time as Economics on the timetable, and I want to take Economics more. The only 2 other subjects I'd consider which fit into the timetable are Biology and Sociology.
I know that Sociology is seen as a 'soft' subject by some, but it seems interesting, and relevant to Law. On the other hand, I like science, and I think I would enjoy Biology. It doesn't seem to go with my other subjects though, and I've been told it's incredibly hard. Which should I take?Last edited by Touchstone; 29-05-2012 at 15:58. -
Re: Biology or Sociology?
Biology goes fine with Economics and Maths (those are the three A-levels I do, although I had Chemistry AS instead of History).
Go for the one you have the greater interest in, although I warn you that Biology is difficult and there's a lot of pure memorisation, so if that doesn't appeal, maybe you shouldn't consider it. -
Re: Biology or Sociology?you've got a harder choice than most people because sociology does seem more relevant to law, but biology would be seen as a stronger subject. i'd personally go with the biology if you think you'd enjoy it, i think it'd be good to show you've got a wide range of skills. (and because i love biology)(Original post by Touchstone)

I'm interested in doing law and did Sociology at GCSE I think it's brilliant and relevant for law. However it depends on what you enjoy and feel you'll do best in, your other subjects are great already so either would be cool. I do not follow the 'hard' or 'soft' subject rule I think both require work, but Biology has a lot of facts and memorising similarly to Sociology with case studies etc...
I would do research into the specs to see what you'll be learning as it also helps

Re: Biology or Sociology?
Biology is ideal for those who enjoy learning facts. Seriously, the amount of stuff that needs to be memorized is monumental. It is the hardest Science I think.
Also, its annoyingly hard to get marks in exams. You do need good exam technique.
I can only speak for the AS anyway, I'm in year 12. -
Re: Biology or Sociology?Arguably Biology is the easiest for that reason though. I mean, I did chemistry and biology at AS, dropping chemistry for A2. Chemistry required application to unseen situations, which required understanding, but biology is and was rote learning. So it follows that if you can learn the stuff, plus the key words the examiners want, you have it made.(Original post by Johnlia06)

Re: Biology or Sociology?
Not being biased (although I do sociology at A2) :P
But I would definitely recommend sociology. You discover why we are the way we are- how government policies, the media and the people we engage with determine our class status and behaviour. It is so interesting and rewarding. Plus two of my close friends both have places at good Russell Group universities to study Law and they both do sociology and love it
But it comes down to which one you'll enjoy more. Maybe speak to some teachers, look at some of the textbooks to get a better idea? -
Re: Biology or Sociology?
Biologyyyyyyyy.
Bit biased as I have devoted my academic life to this subject.
Just do what you enjoy most and will get a better grade it. If you are prepared to work hard, memorise lots of mechanisms, learn a bunch of new processes, then take Biology. An A in Biology will look good on your UCAS form and will make you stand out from most of the other applicants who do all humanities.
Sociology also has its advantages! It's an easy A. If you are interested in law and how society works, then you'll definitely fit well in sociology and be able to get a good grade in it with less work (compared to Biology). Universities won't be particularly impressed by it (as you probably already know, no knowledge of law is required prior to university study). But you'll easily get into any top UK university for Law with A/A*s in Mathematics, Economics, History and Sociology because the other three are more 'traditional' subjects.
Overall, my opinion is that if you're going to take one of the two through to A2, I'd suggest Biology. It links well with Mathematics and a good grade in a science will look great on your UCAS form.
If you're going to drop one of the two prior to A2, then I'd suggest Sociology. Easy A to have as your 4th AS Level. It won't be part of your conditional offer so the subject isn't hugely important. -
Re: Biology or Sociology?Fair enough, it depends on how you study. its just I have a poor memory. With Chemistry and Physics, you can work most things out by thinking logically (i.e from first principles).(Original post by TheWorldEndsWithMe)

You still need to apply your knowledge in Biology exams. The exam I just did had a page filled entirely with suggest questions. -
Re: Biology or Sociology?
As law is such a competitive subject, it might put you at a disadvantage to have a soft subject, as most candidates will have high grades anyway.
Biology is really interesting, if you're interested in it you'll want to work hard for it. I'm kind of contradicting what everyone else has said, but I don't find biology difficult, and the marks are easy to get once you're familiar with the exam technique. If you're applying for law and you're interested in it, I can imagine that you'd be able to get a good grade in biology, and an A in biology is worth a lot more than an A in sociology. -
Re: Biology or Sociology?
For the love of all that is sacred, don't do sociology.
It's a worthless pseudoscientific subject that this generation has lapped up as an easy option. Avoid like the plague. It will get you nowhere. Hell, pretty much anything is better than Sociology.
In my experience it serves mainly to make pretty mediocre people feel clever and condescending, due to the large amount of bloated, esoteric terminology that you will learn to spout on demand. Any idea expressed by a sociologist can be expressed by anyone, the Sociologist just uses fancier words.
AVOID AVOID AVOID.
It is educational (and logical) suicide. -
Re: Biology or Sociology?Well you managed to offend quite a few people studying Sociology with that opinion(Original post by Verbosity)

If you have studied Sociology at A-Level then fair enough. (I doubt this after reading your incorrect definition of a sociologist.) But I think saying it's educational suicide is extremely over dramatic and (unless you are hoping to get into Oxbridge) inaccurate.
