If you're afraid of religious people, there's something seriously wrong going on there

Re: If all religious people were non-violent...That has got to be the most stupid statement I've ever heard.(Original post by thomaskurian89)
If all religious people were non-violent, they would be ridiculed by others. The only reason we "respect" people's religious beliefs is because we're afraid of religious extremists. Do you agree?

Re: If all religious people were non-violent...I find them worrying but I count on the fact that I'm highly unlikely to encounter any. I come from a country where there was a civil war that went on for something over 20 years. So you learn to just go out and deal with life without worrying whether you're gonna get blown up or not(Original post by thomaskurian89)
Don't tell me you're not afraid of religious extremists.
Should I be afraid of religious extremists? I just tend to ignore or laugh at them

Re: If all religious people were non-violent...I wouldn't agree - Out of all major world religions I have the most respect for Buddhism, and they don't particularly have a history of violence.(Original post by thomaskurian89)

Re: If all religious people were non-violent...Sure.(Original post by sebastienlewis)
You gonna' validate your proposition?
If you decided to stand on your head twice a day for no reason, I would make fun of you. But if you did it because it says so in your "holy book", I wouldn't dare. -
Re: If all religious people were non-violent...
It's not just violence. It's also safety in numbers, state-supported, and educated about in childhood. You are right though that religion gets far more respect than other similar beliefs. This is what gives it more respect than other silly ideas. Violence probably only has a small part to play in the question of over-respect as it's only relevant now for a few choice religions.
It is my opinion that beliefs should not be disrespected in that a polite person with private beliefs shouldn't be called names. However, if a religious person wishes to make public statements and accusations, then everyone should be free to respond with full honesty (rather than responding being taboo).
Don't forget that the minority beliefs (minority religions, such as druidism or satanism etc., or random beliefs, like conspiracy theories, cryptozoology, mediumship, alien abductions etc.) are disrespected often by religious people. Some hypocrisy there.Last edited by lightburns; 29-05-2012 at 16:26. -

Re: If all religious people were non-violent...No.
I just don't respect religion/any belief held with no evidence.
I wouldn't insult a moderate who doesn't force his/her beliefs on others. -
Re: If all religious people were non-violent...If you mock a religious person, the level of pleasure and value that you gain from your life would decrease or nullify. Your argument is nonsensical and circular.(Original post by thomaskurian89)

Re: If all religious people were non-violent...
Presumably the reason the media all over Europe and North America refused to publish the Danish cartoons had nothing to do with the death threats, rioting and fatwas?
It is only by force of violence that religion is given any credence at all. It wasn't that long ago that the form of transportation I use daily was attacked and 55 people killed by four religious ratbags who acted as suicide bombers; don't tell me that we have nothing to fear from the religious.
I don't deny the rights of others to hold religious views, but I'm sure as hell not going to refrain from ridiculing them for their delusions.
And the Best of Hitchslap above, seriously, watch it! If you want to have a sense of pride in being someone who values reason, logic and the scientific method, if you don't yet understand why it's more important for some of us to call it as we see it than to protect people's feelings, watch it.Last edited by TieMeUp; 29-05-2012 at 18:16. -
Re: If all religious people were non-violent...
I think what you mean is, people don't disrespect people's religious beliefs (or race for that matter) for a number of reasons;
1. They don't want to offend the masses (what's the point? Especially if it's something that has no progressive goal to it)
2. They don't want to die. (Indeed, for many people, religion is worth killing over, far more than material gains).
Respect however isn't necassarily because of violence. Some people may respect a religious belief for various reasons, such as how devout its followers are, or they simply like a certain aspect of that faith.
I don't think that had much to do with religion, but rather the fact that prior to that the UK was involved in invading another country illegally, which unfortunatly involved British soldiers raping innocent women, killing young children, torturing innocent men and other crimes, which no doubt provoked such attacks like 7/7.(Original post by TieMeUp)

.
So I believe, 7/7 had retribution based motivations.
And if anything, such attacks are only done to try and deter countries illegally invading the ME.Last edited by Perseveranze; 29-05-2012 at 19:05.
