BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012
Hi everyone, I have made derby my firm choice for the BEd and have been invited to an induction day
. I was just wondering if there is anyone else on here going? Do you know what sort of stuff the day consists of? I’m a bit apprehensive since it says no family or friends, and seems quite formal :/ Oh, and do I need to bring anything with me?
Thanks in advance

I'm sooooo excited and nervous :L how about you?
Did you get all those emails about what we have to do before we start
i couldn't believe it :L And we have to start our course earlier than everyone else too :/
but I'm not complaining i cant wait to start!
anyway, I'm also going to the pre-induction day
so I'll see you there
I'm not really sure what we will be asked to do
maybe someone else will know?
and i don't think we need to bring anything, well, maybe a pen? it just says activities to 'get you thinking about learning and teaching in the primary classroom. Come prepared to engage fully!'
i hope its nothing too serious anyway!
P.S my names Megan
whats yours and where do you live, will you be traveling far? (that's to anyone else who wants to answer too)

Yeah I'm quite nervous too, but I'm excited more than anything
It is a bit scary though... moving to a new city and stuff.
Speaking of which where will you be staying?
And yeah i did get them, I couldn't believe it either. I really didn't think we would need to do all of this :L Have you sorted out that Pre-placement thing yet?
Yeah I was thinking I would just bring a pen, and a small bag in case we get any handouts or stuff. Don't forget though, bring your CRB stuff.
I think it sounds quite scary, but i cant be much worse than the interview, can it? Anyway i didn't find that too bad
How did your interview go?
And i live in the east midlands
not too far, only about 40mins in the car. You?

Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012OMG I know :L I'm so nervous too! i don't know anyone which makes it even worse(Original post by Abbi123)
Hey I'm going to the induction day too on the 28th June. I'm really excited/nervous.
That list was so long as to what we are to bring etc.. :/
I'm hoping to meet a few new people there though
and hopefully i will recognise someone that went to the same interview as me or something
so do you have to travel far?
oh, and did you see the timetable.... its sooo full :L i nearly cried :'). my boyfriend is going to uni this year as well and he doesn't start til the 17th and has been told he will probably only be in for a max of 3 days a week. When i applied to teaching i really didn't think it would be this much work :/ -
Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012I didnt think there would be any other inductions or anything on that day(Original post by Sarang_assa)
I'm doing the induction day for the Primary PGCE on the same day and we'll be applying for our CRB so maybe they'll email you soon about what you need to bring? Do you guys start on Sept 10th too?
maybe we will see eachother with them both being teaching courses
Well they did email us about the the CRB, as we have to also do one, I just meant do we need pens, notebooks or anything like that?
And no we dont start then, we start on the tue 12th september
I thought our start date was quite early though :/ -
Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012
Yeh it's well early for undergrad! At least the workload shouldn't have gotten too heavy for you by Freshers week!
I think in the e-mail we got it said we'd get our timetables and stuff so maybe a pen and notebook just to make any notes of important imformation.
Is your induction 9.30-2pm too? -
Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012I know it is really scary! I was going to apply to halls but then i decided i would stay at home for the first year and just travel in. I don't live that far though probably about 40-50 mins on the train... so i wont have to get up too early! :P(Original post by beccamxx)
Nice to meet you

No not yet
I'm just trying to get all of my exams out of the way first, my last one is on the 20th so i will sort it out then. Have you? And did it take long to organise?
Yeah all I'm taking is my CRB documents, a bag and pen :P
My interview went alright i found the test part worse and the rest was alrightish
How did you think it went? And which one did you do to?

Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012Some of my best assignments were the result of me being drunk and half asleep, although I'm not sure that'll fly at masters level! Where are you staying?(Original post by beccamxx)
yeah i know... my boyfriend doesn't start until the 17th and i know some peoples courses are even later than that :/
ahaha i hope so :P or I'm going to be going to be doing assignments drunk and half asleep ;P
Yeah i think they said we get provisional timetables then and the proper ones when we start in September, but they sent us a timetable thing so i already know a rough idea of what days and times i will be going in
and yeah that's what i was thinking, i don't think I'll need anything else.
No, we have the same starting time (9.30) but they said we probably wont be finished until 4! so its quite a long day really... but it should be good
are you looking forward to yours?
Oooh we haven't got provisional timetables yet, I imagine they don't want to put us off, lol. I know its 5 days a week 9-4.30 but thats it.
I'm a bit nervous but really excited. I made a PGCE group on Facebook and there's over 30 of us now which is nice, we're meeting up after the induction to go for drinks and get to know each other so hopefully that will make September less scary! So are you guys doing a 3 year course then? xx -
Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012Haha, I will remember that... it will give me a good excuse :P(Original post by Sarang_assa)

yeah they sent it through with all the other information, it just had basic stuff like what assignments there are, and what time table each group has (as there are 4 different groups). I wish they didn't give me one tbh, it nearly scared me off :L I think our course ranges at uni its between 9.15-5 and when we are on placement its 8.15-5 (which is far to early if you ask me :L )
that's good, at least you will know a few people before your course starts. I'm hoping i meet some people on the induction day, i met some people at the interview, but I'm not sure if derby was their firm :/
And it depends i think its 4 years with the opinion to complete it in 3 if you'd prefer. But I'm hoping to do the 4 year one..... but hey that might change once i start :L -
Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012I didn't see your post for a minute there :L(Original post by mizzmegg)

Yeah i think it is a big step from living with parents to on your own... At least that way you can you get to know some people and hopefully find someone to live with for your second year
Yeah i guess its the last thing on peoples minds atm
But yeah i have got mine sorted, I'm a little unorganised so i wanted to make sure i did it before it got too late :L
And no i sorted mine surprisingly quick, i was expecting it to take a few weeks but i got it sorted in under 1 week
So if you can gets yours sorted fairly quick too you will still have plenty time to do it at the end of the summer
watch it... me and you will just take a pen, and everyone else will be taking loads :L
Yeah i definitely agree with you, the test was worse, and the other parts weren't so bad. I didn't really mind the group interview, i managed to get involved so it was quite good
I can't remember the exact date, i know it was the first one though, end of November, beginning of December time
how about you? xx

Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012
Hi, I have chosen Derby as my insurance choice and haven't received any information whatsoever regarding the pre induction day tomorrow, so I'm wondering if it only applies to those who have chosen Derby as their firm choice? I have sent an email to the University but am still waiting for a reply.
If any of you have chosen Derby as your insurance choice, or know anyone who has for this course, could you please let me know if I am supposed to attend tomorrow? I'm really panicking now because if I am supposed to go it doesn't leave me a lot of time to get organised, and I don't really want to travel all the way there only to find out I'm not supposed to be there.
Thankyou x -

Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012Sorry this is late, but i thought i would let you know just in case you were still worrying :L(Original post by peardrops)

the pre-induction day was only for those who had chose derby as their firm choice, so i doubt anyone else who put it as their insurance would have got any of the information about the pre-induction day or any of the other info either. so, you have nothing to worry about

I am just worried that when i get on the course i wont be good at anything, and i wont be able to do the work
Any advice?
Oh, and i was also wondering if your first year counts towards your final classification- i have been told my numerous people that it doesn't?
Thank you so much!

Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012
Hi lovely

I was the same when I was applying - I met a couple of girls at other uni's doing Primary ed and they were so helpful so its nice to be able to help!
You will definitley be able to do the work - they wouldn't accept you at interview if they didn't think you was capable. The great thing about Derby too is that they will give you extra help where you need it. For example maths is my weakest subject (especially when teaching yr 5/6!) and so some lecturers will put on extra help lunchtime sessions and mentoring buddy's was set up so students could support each other. It does get touch at times - but it is a degree as well as a professional qualification (QTS) so everyone feels its hard work at some point! Saying that - it's all worth it of course
The first year does count somewhat - but not towards your final classification degree. In the first year your essay writing is Level 4 (the step up from A levels) and for those who don't bother because it 'doesn't count' find it very difficult to move up to level 5 writing in the 2nd year of the course. The placement also counts too so its definitley important to still make the first year count
Any more questions just ask
xx

Re: BEd Primary Education Induction Day 28th June 2012That puts me at ease quite allot, i am one of those people who, if i am struggling, will keep it to my self as i dont want to put anyone out, seem stupid or make a fuss! Its reassuring to know that people do find it hard, but that there are steps to help them overcome this(Original post by stephssss)

I didn't plan on not bothering if it doesn't count, i was just curious because i have heard it doesn't, and didn't quite believe it :L I am really hoping to make my first year count, as I'm sure that if i try hard then, it will just make the transition from year 1 to year 2 that much easier!
And how does placement count exactly, do you get graded on it or something? or do you just mean it counts in the experience it gives you? Also, regarding placement, how far do you have to travel?
P.S Thank you so much for your reply
