Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam DiscussionHmmm.....i need to get 132 which is 66 raw marks...but it is always over double the raw marks if you look at boundaries for unit 1 and 2 especially when you are in the A - E regions. When you get to high A* then doubling would work.(Original post by dada55)
112 + 116 = 228
360 - 228 = 132
132/160 = 82.5%
82.5% of 80 marks = 66 Raw marks
So If they don't lower the grade boundaries and you do get 65, you will be 1 mark short off an A*. However I still think the chances of grade boundaries being high or kept the same as low, so you are very like to get an A*.
my point is that if 45/60 is 103 UMS (in unit 1/2 last year) than surely 65/80 is around high 130's low 140's because 65/80 is harder to get than 45/60..... -
Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam DiscussionLike I said in my post, my "calculations" were based if they don't change the grade boundaries. In my opinion, there is a very high chance they will lower the grade boundaries, thus you will need lower raw marks to get the same amount of UMS points. So I wouldn't worry.(Original post by saq96)

Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam Discussionwell the grade boundaries I just checked said you need 240 ums for a C. That mean you need 79 UMS in unit 3 for a C. Of course, the grade boundaries could change though, so what I just told you is purely based on what I found on the edexcel website(Original post by Tommo96)
I have 161 overall from units 1 and 2. How many raw marks for this paper would I need for a C? -
Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam Discussion
There was a question where you had to comment on the gradient of a graph, or something like that. My teacher had never covered it to my knowledge so I wasn't sure what to write, could anyone explain it to me?
Also, I've just realised I'm dead... I was only allowed to drop 2.5 marks in this exam to get an A*... Does anyone remember the amount of marks on the cone question? I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna get that A* /:
Sorry if this has already been covered I'm flicking through the whole feed now to try and find it (: -
Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam DiscussionThe gradient question (if we're talking about the same question), you really just give a practical and/or realistic interpretation. So like, if it's 2 marks, then I think 1 mark for mathematical interpretation (like, 'negative gradient' and/or calculation of gradient, unless that's a different question) and then the real thing. So for example, I think it was something like 'The line shows a positive gradient where each 20 miles uses up 1 gallon of petrol' (making up numbers, and answer if it's not appropriate for this question).(Original post by Raven1895)

As for the cone, I think the whole question (part a, b etc) is worth I think 4 or 6 marks? -
Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam DiscussionDont think so, very slight possibility if the grade boundaries are lowered a LOT, but that should get you something around 133-135 with the basic rules(Original post by pop101)
Would 65 or 66 RAW marks get me 141 UMS? -
Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam Discussionthat doesn't seem very likely, because the grade boundaries would have to be lowered VERY significantly. Although having said that, it's not impossible - just very unlikely(Original post by pop101)

Thank you so much! I wrote pretty much the same as that(Original post by Boggieeiggob)

Ahh, damnit I've missed my margin. However thank you very much for the help

UMS marks don't change (to my knowledge) it's the grade boundaries that shift. The test was 80 raw with 160 UMS so just double your raw marks (:(Original post by pop101)

Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam DiscussionWell, the marks don't change, no. But what you end up with can change according to the grade boundaries because the final grade boundaries will decided once all the papers have been marked, and once the grade boundaries have been decided, then the formula used by examiners to calculate UMS marks can be devised, so THEN the UMS marks can be worked out(Original post by Raven1895)

Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam Discussion
Sitting this exam in November, and I'm really worried.
5MB1H - 96 (Managed to scrape an A after resitting)
5MB2H - 92
Which means in 5MB3H i need 4 marks above an A to get an A overall.
Now this may seem easy to you guys, but if i can't get an A the first time in the other 2 exams, how am i supposed to in this exam which is supposedly the hardest.
I need 132/160 UMS (96+92+132=320)
So any advice, plus revision/mock papers to revise from (I already have the one that was sat in June).
Thanks. -
Re: GCSE Edexcel Maths Unit 3 19/06/2012 Exam DiscussionReally, you need to cover key points, which is mainly formulas and rules and stuff. You'll also need the skills to answer questions and stuff, i.e, recognizing when to use which method (formula or whatever) to answer the question, and when and how to apply each method and stuff.(Original post by Kill3er)

I know you've got all the practice papers and this is pretty obvious, but just keep practicing. That's all the advice really that I can give ><' -

Edit: Thanks.
Lets hope i can get my A, after 3 months on solid revision.Last edited by Kill3er; 07-08-2012 at 18:03. -

Could anyone give me an idea of the raw mark needed to gain 130 ums in this paper? Just an estimate would be very much appreciated

Around 65/80 i'd say.
Give or take a mark or two.
