    PhD interview this Friday....need guidance
    Hi,
I have an interview coming up on this Friday for PhD studentship. It was a project set up by the university in Public Health. This will be my first ever interview for PhD so I have no idea what to expect. I have read around the topic but now I am confused and don't know what and how much I need to know.
    Thank.

Appear interested and enthusiastic. That's the most important thing.

When I had mine (for a PhD student ship in computer science) they asked why I wanted to study for a PhD etc. they didn't seem that fussed about how much of the topic that I already knew!

Like already said, just be enthusiastic and don't worry!

DON'T, I repeat DON'T ask the interviewer what gender they are. Like 90% of the time that doesn't go down well. Anyway good luck.

Expect to talk about any project/dissertation/extended essay you have done, especially if it's relevant to the PhD topic.

Think about a what you might want to do post-PhD, as they may ask you what your future plans are and where you see yourself in a couple of years.

You'll do just fine. Competition for funded PhD's are fierce, you've done very well in getting shortlisted for interview.

Keep positive, be eager and as mentioned above, enthusiastic!

    Good luck for Friday

I applied for mine with quite a long proposal (not sure if you will have if it's a project that's already outlined or in set up) so they asked me about my proposal, about alternative methods if things didn't work, and why I was interested in that.

They also asked me about my experience with research so far.

Try to have at least one question to ask them - maybe what they would envisage the successful candidate doing post-PhD, or what opportunities there are for presenting and disseminating your work within the department?

Try to get across your enthusiasm as other people have said. And maybe have a look at the work of the people interviewing you if you haven't done so already.

    Good luck!

Thank you very much for your guidance and advices

and according to the same questions about interview, I am an international student and hope to ask about Manchester university where I intend to apply for phd position in the electrical and electronics engineering department under supervision of Dr Kopsidas Konstantinos Kopsidas

And I hope any one advice me before I came to university so I was able to prepare myself and know more about the system Phd in the department of electrical engineering, and I'll be very pleasure if any one know about Dr Kopsidas and the topics related to him else that written on his home page above and if any one supervised by him before ???

    yours,

    Re: Question for interview panel?
    (Original post by sonia1111)
    Hi,
I have an interview coming up for PhD soon. To my knowledge there is always a question asked "do you have any questions?". Its difficult to know what would be the appropriate and best question to ask them. Any guidance?

    Thanks
[quoting you to get your attention]
Could I ask you not to create a new thread for this again? The reason why I merged it back into this one the first time was that it's a question that is very closely related to the one implied in your initial thread, i.e. what you can do to prepare for your interview on Friday.

Don't come up with a question just for the sake of having a question. If you can't think of a question it probably means you've done your research. You could just say something like: "I don't have any questions - I think the research I have done into this course has given me all I need to know at this point."

I had one last month (and got an offer with funding). Where does your interest come from? Why a PhD as opposed to other research? (Depending on the field) what are the theoretical underpinnings of the proposed research? Your experience with the proposed research methods etc. Make sure you have an answer prepared for everything. Seem enthusiastic, smile and maintain eye contact.

i have had this a number of times with different universities, depends on your subject and your supervisor, but generally speaking, just chill and be yourself. academics tend to hate pretentious, overambitious and melodramatic applicants. be clear about what you can offer and what you expect of them. be very clear about what you have already learned and what you need to learn.
