I want to gain weight..
I'm far too light for my height, and my BMI is classified as underweight.
I eat 3 big meals a day plus snacks, and do no exercise. My weight never changes.
How can I gain weight, either muscle weight or fat?
Is there a good exercise plan online or that any of you follow that would build muscle? I'm worried that if I start to exercise I'll lose weight, and I really can't afford to. -

You don't eat enough. -

Eat pie. Lots of pie. -
Re: I want to gain weight..This.(Original post by sil3nt_cha0s)
You don't eat enough.
It's funny when thin people say they eat loads. And then you ask what did they have for tea and they say something like a massive curry, but the reality is that they ate about half the pieces of chicken and a few spoons of rice...
If you want to put on more weight, you have to eat more. Simple -
Re: I want to gain weight..
Eat more. Most people who say they can't gain weight don't actually eat much. If you can't stomach more food then drink some calories. I just had a 900 calorie protein shake, a few of those a day on top of a solid diet will soon have you putting on weight(admittedly mainly fat) but if you're happy with putting on fat then win/win.

Re: I want to gain weight..
Actually record exactly what you're eating and you'll most likely find you're eating less than you think. Myfitness pal is a good site to do this as it has most foods on there.
To gain weight, probably start eating 500 calories a day more than you burn, which should make you gain about 1lb a week. There are websites where you can figure this out or on myfitnesspal you can set your goal to gain weight and it'll tell you how much to aim for. My guess is somewhere around 2000 - 2500 calories.
Foods like nuts are good to get extra calories from a small amount, and/or drink milk.Last edited by ily_em; 29-05-2012 at 19:53. -
Re: I want to gain weight..
look up 3000kcal diets, these are used for bulking up.
Always use olive oil when possible as it has a lot of calories in it.
Here is an example of a days diet plan. -
Re: I want to gain weight..
You probably are eating enough- if you are- its because of your body shape as ectomorphs are able to eat a lot but remain skinny and this is probably due to a high resting metabolic rate (the speed in which your metabolism burns calories) you can gain weight by eating more than your RMR which you can find at any RMR calculator websites. If you aren't eating enough, I suggest 6-8 big meals a day of lean meats and carbohydrates, and less fatty foods, and also more exercise as this promotes muscle growth

Re: I want to gain weight..Work out your base metabolic rate (there are calculators on Google), then add a few hundred kcal on top of that. It's only a rough estimate, so if you're not gaining weight, eat even more.(Original post by EmmaJane_)
How many calories per day do you suggest I eat?
No, no, no. You don't want to be like the majority of females who aim to be skinny-fat messes (or they might not know they're aiming for that, but their actions will result in it).(Original post by EmmaJane_)
I already eat lots of pie! I live off fatty/carb rich foods!
Eat calorie dense foods which have decent protein in them. Whole milk and peanuts are two perfect examples.
Then find a weights routine. Bodybuilding.com has a lot of information, or post in this thread: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=1445988 and they will help you. -
Re: I want to gain weight..
Please don't listen to these people, they don't know what they're talking about.
The easiest way to gain weight is to set up a routine of eating small meals at regular intervals. E.g. have a meal every three hours. Try to keep every meal above 400 Kcalories.
If you want to gain muscle you need to join a gym and start an anaerobic exercise routine. Muscle is denser than fat so you'll gain weight fast. -
Re: I want to gain weight..Couldnt be more untrue. She needs to put on muscle, eating more will likely only just give her a belly if she does no exercise. If you consider 3500 calories as not much, then you're a fool, which is what I eat.(Original post by LookIt'sPete)

Re: I want to gain weight..OMG. I totally have the same thing. I have always been really thin. No matter how much I eat. Even when I eat more than my friends and stuff I remain thin. It is like impossible for me to put on weight and I hate it because if you just look at me it looks as if I have an eating disorder I'm that thin but I actually don't, I eat 3 or 4 meals a day and sometimes snack in between!(Original post by EmmaJane_)

People also say that muscle weighs more than fat so when me and 2 of my friends used to run 5 times a week, while their weight went up with their muscle building, mine stayed the same!
It's so not fair, I sympathise. I can't give advise thought because I don't know what to do either.
People have told me though as I get older my metabolism will drop and I will look more normal, or I will put on weight if I ever become pregnant. -
