Are there any medical schools that will take 3-year A level candidates?
I know this isn't really a straight-forward yes/no answer, but I was wondering if anyone had any experiences of universities that had taken on students who had completed their A levels in three years, including those who resat their AS year.

If not, does anyone know of any alternative routes into medicine? For example I don't really understand how foundation courses work (how you get on to them, what they do for you etc.)

I would eventually like to train to become a GP or other specialised consultant and just wondered if there was any way of achieving this under the aforementioned circumstances. All help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Foundation and widening access are usually made for people without the right A-Levels or come from deprived (for lack of a better word) backgrounds.

But sometimes you can still get through even if you do not fit those criteria. Check Bradford clinical sciences out.

There is also post grad option you can consider although this is more competitive and expensive.

Does that mean then that there isn't a way that a candidate in my position could progress straight into a medical school? I was wondering if there were any universities in the United Kingdom that would take someone having completed A levels in 3 years.

I am resitting my AS year. Basically What happened is I initially took English Literature, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry and I failed Mathematics and Biology. In my sixth form you have to pass the three subjects you wish to take to A2 and having only passed two, I obviously did not fulfill the necessary criteria. I was then told that all of the Biology classes were full and so they would make an exception for me. The understand was that I took up Philosophy & Ethics instead of Maths and continued with Chemistry and English. I then studied Biology on my own completely (without an external tutor etc.) And gained a top A grade in my January Unit 1 Module and full marks in my coursework. I just sat Unit 2 last week and all went swimmingly. The school have commended me for having progressed so much by myself, but I am sure that my mistakes from last year will now be holding me back from doing the one and only thing I want to do with my life. I hope I haven't confused you! Thanks for your help.

Best thing would be to contact all the universities and ask them about your situation. Worse case scenario they all say they don't accept it. In that case I would say apply for a course such as biomedical science which gives you the opportunity to transfer to medicine such as St.George and/or apply to Bradford clinical sciences which also let you transfer to medicine at Leeds. If you don't manage to transfer there is always the post grad route.

Thank you for the recommendations for St George and Bradford - Leeds was where I wanted to study initially. I will look into alternative courses with transfers and post grad degrees. Very happy Thank you very much!

Before you start thinking about doing courses offering the possibility of a transfer you should contact every medical school you're interested in and ask them their advice. There are a few medical schools that consider resitters (BSMS is one) and surely that's a better option to persue initially.

I'd be cautious of Bradford clinical sciences - only a few students are accepted to trasnfer to medicine each year (sometimes none) and the rest are stuck on a degree at Bradford.

Have you considered applying to a European Medical School ? They are only concerned with Grades not duration it takes to get them.

Only thing to consider is finance as most European Medical Schools are not eligible for UK student finance.
