I've applied to the student village, en suite first My bathroom's ridiculously messy, so I wouldn't want to mess someone else's bathroom up
I don't have many questions, just:
How much practical stuff do you get to do? Like farm visits and handling animals, etc...
Do you get too much work to get a part time job?
Do many people finish this course and go on to do veterinary science? How do most people fund it, cause it's £25,000ish a year

    Thanks!

    Hi.
I'm currently at Lincoln Uni (Just finished my first year) so if you got any questions, I'll try answer them the best I can
We have a fair bit of practical stuff, although I've heard you get to do more practicals in the second year. But for the first year we've had (more or less) at least one practical a week, to sometimes 2 or we could go a few weeks without a practical. Most of it is doing things in the lab, like we got to look at microrganisms in river water to using heart rate equipment like spirometers and ECG machines. It's really varied. We've also had a fair few dissections as well (Horse's heart, piglets, sheep respiratory system, rats etc..)

And as for farm work, we got to tip some sheep for one of our modules but other than that we haven't really been to the farm much. Although there's always the chance of lambing in the spring if you put your name down for it. There isn't too much animal handling, but I've heard it does increase in second year (not sure if it's true) but I remedied not having enough handling with volunteering in some of the places the uni is in association with. Like in the first semester I volunteered for a wildlife hospital. I also helped out on the Riseholme unit for a bit, but as I've heard the campuses are moving, I'm not too sure if those sort of opportunities would still be there, but as I said, if you want animal handling, there's plenty of places you can go to volunteer There is time within the timetable to squeeze in extracurricular stuffs. So I would definitely reckon you could get a part time job, as long as you manage your time well with all the assignments/ work on the cards too.

And to answer your final question, quite a lot to go on to do veterinary medicine, and as a postgrad, it's incredibly difficult and stupidly expensive! I've often wondered how people to it unless they have a mountain of money spare as fees in the UK often increase for vetmed after your first degree in some uni's. So I've been looking at places abroad for vet med, just to keep my options open. It's A bit less expensive but still a lot of money to find! The careers service at Lincoln is very helpful so I'm sure if you dropped in for a chat, they would be more than willing to help (plus I've heard that they have some connections/ are aware of vet uni's abroad, like Kosice so they may be able to help with things like that) but as to funding it, Im not too sure. Some people try and raise it themselves, coupled with family lending them money, bank loans, career development or sending out shed loads of letters and emails to every local sponsorship/ grant associations available.

But aside from vet med, there is so much you can go on to do with this course. Your not just localised to going on to vet med. You can go on to all sorts of masters, conservation work, lab work (hospitals, forensics or vet), in research and development etc... it's a varied course so there are many windows still open.

Sorry for the long post! And hope this helped. Any more questions, feel free to ask ^^

Don't worry about the long post, it's been helpful! Turns out I've got more questions than I thought...
I've wanted to be a vet since I can remember, bit of a cliche... So doing something else is unthinkable :/ Kosice looks quite good, but fees are around £7500 I think, and Pretoria is cheaper but harder to get into...
Have you heard anything about the changes to the course structure? I got a letter a few weeks ago saying they were adding in an optional 3rd year abroad, which sounds amazing, but that was pretty all that was in the letter.
Finally, how many people on average are there in one year? I couldn't find anything on lincolns website or on here...
Thanks for all your help btw, you're been amazing

Yeah I aren't too happy with the change in course structure. They seem to have grouped all the animal handing modules together in the new optional modules, eg: livestock systems, management systems, behaviour etc. They've completely scrapped applied statistics, diagnostic and analytics and equine disease. However, I do like the two options in final year for the "overseas field course" modules! Another things, I'm unsure whether I'm happy about the changing of campuses. Riseholme really sold it for me. Ah well, suppose we can only try it now we've firmed it haha!

I haven't actually heard anything at all about the changes to the course! Everything I've heard has been from you or this thread xD. I'd be interested to know myself though, but I don't think they will affect my course year so that's probably why I haven't been told of such. I'm hoping we get the optional 3rd year abroad though!
And it's quite difficult to say how many there is in one year, there was a huge boom for biovet when I started, as it was the last year of the 3 grand fees and such so we were quite a big group. Plus, in lectures your put with other courses such as those from behaviour, biology, equine science etc.. so their fairly big class sizes. However they are shortened and made smaller for some seminars, practicals and revision sessions as they tend to put you into smaller group dependent on your ability when it comes to the revision/ recap sessions before exams and what not.
    Hope that helped ^^

They probably won't need to go up to Riseholme everyday, as the campus itself is being phased out and isn't really in conjunxion with the Uni anymore as some other HE colleges have bought it and the uni have terminated their contracted with them (or so I've heard) so the majority of time will be spent at Brayford I think. I used to quite like spending lectures at Riseholme though!

The FE courses (which I believe are for 16+ year olds) are being phased out because of the Bishop Burton taking them over, however all HE courses (uni courses) are being continued here as usual so anyone doing those style courses will still have to go up to Riseholme.
I liked the lectures there, it is a pretty campus. But the annoying bus times were horrible; arrive late to a lecture of 1hr+ early. Or just miss the bus home or have to wait for 1hr+ after. HORRIBLE

Ohh rightt, that sucks! I thought it was the uni courses that the Riseholme were phasing out! I was living at Riseholme for the first year so it was easy to roll out of bed and go to lectures, but I'm going to be in Brayford for this year so I was kind of hoping I wouldn't have to catch the bus everyday to go to Riseholme D; Means getting up earlier to float around the campus for a bit until lectures start ;[ I agree about the bus times though! Even though they're fairly frequent, having to wait around for them for a few hours is a huge pain!

I know! I haven't really heard much and I'm not quite sure who my course tutor is, I've heard a few tutors are leaving (including my course tutor)! I hope we get a few lessons in Brayford though, I haven't really had any lectures there apart from Practicals.
I'm sure we'll find out when we get back ;D
