Giggling in exams
So, I've got exams coming up and as well as stressing about them in the usual way, I'm worrying about the fact that I might start laughing in them

If you've seen the episode of Outnumbered where Sue gets the giggles at a funeral then that's me. I think it must be down to nerves but last year I got the giggles about a question that struck me as hilarious in the exam. And you know when you start giggling, you really can't stop? That kind of hysterical laughter has happened to me in ALL my exams since that paper and I'm so worried it's going to happen again
I tried to explain that I really couldn't help it but the examiners thought I was just messing about and gave me a warning. Teachers aren't any help because even though I've repeatedly gone back with my worries they just say to forget about it and think of something serious, which really doesn't help.
Any tips for stopping the giggles? The harder I try to stop the worse I get. -
Re: Giggling in exams
You know what I do when I get the giggles?
Don't try to stop yourself. Try this:
DON'T, WHATEVER YOU DO, THINK ABOUT PENGUINS. Just stop thinking about penguins. Ok? Get penguins out of your mind. Try as hard as you can to forget about penguins.
The harder you try, the harder it becomes.
I just accept that I'm laughing and tell myself that pretty soon, I will realize it's not funny. It's the trying to stop myself laughing that reminds me how funny something is, and so I laugh more. -

On a serious note though I know how you feel. I often get the giggles when I'm really tired and it can be so embarrassing. Try to control your breathing- like really concentrate on taking a big slow breath and then slowly release it. This works for me.
Apart from that I'd do as the person above suggested and ask to be in a separate room.

Re: Giggling in exams
I have the same issue, I always get nervous abotu finding something funny and laughing out loud. See I have quite an innappropriate sense of humour, so that when something is funny, I won't get the joke, and I will laugh at something which isn't remotely funny. I just trail of in my mind and come to funny things. Sometimes I burst out in the street on the way to college, it's ridicuous!

But anyway, in exam mode you will be fine. You will be so concerned about the exam once your in that it won't cross your mind to laugh.

Re: Giggling in exams
I laughed through the whole of the Maths Challenge in year 10. Safe to say I didn't get a certificate...
Never been a problem in real exams though, but a friend of mine has a similar problem, and she has the classic elastic band on her wrist to snap. Always sounded rather painful though. -
Re: Giggling in exams
I did this in a biology exam this year. The question started off with the phrase; " with particular reference to shrimp faeces..." and a childish part of me thought that this was ****ing hilarious. It happened about halfway through a 2.5 hour long exam and I couldn't stop laughing for about a minute and a half.

Apart from that I'd do as the person above suggested and ask to be in a separate room.
